Can you imagine just how creepy this room would look at night?
creepy enough in the daytime wouldnt want to see it at night
Curtains match the walls.....
The curtians look strangely new....
It's interesting how curtains in these places seem to do much better than the walls, the floors, the ceilings....
i think it would of been a beuatiful place, but with time and decay it makes it look a nightmareish place :-)
Sallie, I don't think Pennhurst was ever a beautiful place. The structures themselves look wonderful but inside I think it truly was the 'pit of despair'.

Check out El Peecho's Pennhurst site for some rather disturbing images of what it looked like in use (late 70s).
Twug, these curtains look to be out of reach, while the walls are at perfect kick hight for smacktard vandals.
Thanks, Ack. I should know that as I can barely reach the floor when I sit in a chair (yes, that would be a lonely chair). :)
Ack, that word! 8`-(
Pennhurst was always dirty. Because the childern were not taken care of, it was not uncommon for a patient to walk around covered in their own filth.
Looks like my place after an all night, wacked out college party.and belive me, thats very bad. : (
my boyfriend's mother grew up in the area.. her sister worked there (in the offices) and she went there to visit.. and she says the place always looked creepy and sad.. she never liked the place even when it was open..
Maybe, just maybe, some children or people were happy here. Maybe it was better than what they had at home.
when my mom was younger she would go there to help wrap presents for the people there. her friends mom was an administrator i think. she said the people there were nice .
