Safety Bathroom

Safety Bathroom

A railing surrounds the sinks to help support unsteady patients, and the mirrors were made out of a thin metal. I'm pretty sure these glass-alternative mirrors were made like this to prevent patients from smashing them and getting hurt or using the glass as a weapon, but it completely distorts your reflection. It's like looking into a funhouse mirror every morning.

These mirrors, and the dehumanizing effect they must have had on the people who lived here, are mentioned in the Lou Chapman report you linked to on the front page of this section.
why would they use "fun house" like mirrors in a Mental Institution...
cmon now silkster read the description.....the image is distorted because its not really glass. its metal or possibally plexi glass which distorts the image to "look" like a funhouse mirror
i think at the time they where more concerned with the patients breaking the glass and cutting themselves with it, so they installed the next best thing.
That's right, metal sheets cannot shatter and be used as a weapon or for suicide attempts. The sheets might've distorted after they were drilled into the wall; one of those "it looked like a good idea on paper" kinda things.
My school (a normal high school) uses metal mirrors that don't seem to have been polished for decades. You can't see anything in them.
MadMan, youre absolutely right, this is one that I didnt read the description on, please strike my above comment.
thanks : )
Travelling coast to coast on our interstate highway system, one will find these metal mirrors in most public rest stops. They are used in place of glass simply because moronic vandals cannot smash the metal as they would real glass mirrors. Sad commentary on some of our so called "sane" travelers.
Yeah, the mirrors could have been distorted by perhaps vandals trying to smash them with something...cause if you notice if youve ever been there, theres basically not one mirror thats not been shattered.
I've seen polished chrome mirrors at a few high schools in not-so-nice neighborhoods for the same reason....to prevent them from being shattered and the shards used to harm people.
What kind of light fixture is that between the sinks?

*wink,wink*
Maybe a handy one?
LST89,
I must know,
i must!
Sorry I cannot possibly reveal the top secrets of the "handy" light fixture's principle of operation, or weather or not it exsists at all. It must remain unknown ~Me for all time. (unless you can treach me the pirate dance). ^_^
In order to do the Pirate dance, you simply have to be. (and wear or bring something to the dance that is Pirate-like....) we need to talk. See the paragraph above? Click on Opacity Junkies. All the regulars, and then some, are on there.
Depends, can we do it horizontally?
~Me, if you can dance horizontally, you must be a contortionist. Unless, of course, you are talking about something totally different. Is a muzzle in order here...? And why are you talking about undergarments again?
Sorry for the cornfusion LST, it's the paragraph above Post A Comment. My Bad!
it's a soap dispenser.
it might be just the empathic in me but right about now i just would cry if i was there im fighting back the tears as we speak this is the saddest place .. just so very sad...
I must admit that I am fighting back the tears as well . . . . . .
Abandoned sinks always make me cry!
For me, (not ~Me) It's those evil dehumanizing warped metal mirrors.... They...just....make...me...cry....
:' ` ` ` (
if it was like that it most of made them more insane...thinking there deformed
Wow, This is torture
What I want know...what is that stuff above the sinks? Is it insulations coming from the walls or some other gunk? I am just curious.
what is that bottle of shit on the sink?
Does anyone else noticed that the sinks are numbered? right above them. look!
The bottle of stuff on the sink looks like Gilette powder or after shave to me.
The mirrors contribute to the unreal feel this place seems to have. It just seems to disconnected from the world....
SO disconnected, I mean.
its so weird how everything was left as is....
Those mirrors kind of look the sort of mirrors that you find in one of the fun houses in a carnival.

Signed: An American Soldier in Germany.
That looks amazing. I want to go to it.
I knew this kid at one time who, upon looking at these mirrors, thought the room was on fire and melting, hence the distortion.
when in use tey didn't distort your face--that came with age and changing tempertures.
the soap dispenser is mad old school
I think it's ironic how the "mirrors" distort your reflection, when , being institutionalized, your perception of reality would also be sadly distorted.
I've always thought that that piping around those sinks and other fixtures were more about preventing a patient from damaging or ripping out a sink than for their ease of movement. I just don't see a viable handhold here or anything that improves mobility.
These are great devices to assist someone with limited mobility so they can pull themselves upright to stand at the sink. This gives them the opportunity to use the mirrors and increases their personal image because they aren't limited to a single plane in space - what they can see from a seated level. There is a lot of research that shows that people in wheelchairs (with or without other issues) are not treated the same as people out of wheelchairs because people bend DOWN to look at them. Increasing the person's "height" increases their interaction opportunities and their ability to interact more "normally" in their environment. If you put all the fixtures at wheelchair level you are assuming the person can never leave their wheelchair, and there are LOTS of people who can stand for short periods of time if they have a way to get themselves up and/or down in their chairs.

Of course, if you keep looking long enough for something bad, you're bound to find it. :-)
at least theres soap!1
holy hell the light fixure is blinding!
Oh, so THAT'S how the metal "distortion" mirrors look.
Twug: Perhaps ~Me could use some cohorts with codenames ~Myself and ~I LOL!!
I know a man who spent 12 years in this place and every day this man is hunted by the things that happened to him in here. I feel sorry for anyone who had to spend any time in this place. it should have been closed down long before it was.
why is there a bottle on sink
Perhaps it's soap to refill the soap dispenser. ;)
SOAP DISPENSER!! ;-)
Yeah Those Mirrors SUCK !
Cant beleive the porcelain sinks werent smashed to get the brass and copper out, all the other copper in this place has been stolen long ago
