Patient Tunnel

Patient Tunnel

Here's a shot of the strange patient tunnels... I'm trying to light up the walls with my flashlight because it's pitch black most of the way through. Ahead is an opened door, letting a little light inside. The steam tunnel runs alongside these, behind locked doors.

These tunnels are above ground, why aren't there any windows?!

That is a particularily eerie picture, and it almost looks as if there is a dark figure on the left, which fades off towards the floor.
Very, very nice, indeed.
Thanks, yeah that's me trying to light the shot.
I would call this shot "Ghost Train"
I wonder why the tunnels looked like this, they must have relied totally on electric lights to get light in.. what happened if there were patients being transported during a power outage?
Most large institutions now have back-up generators for power outages, especially institutions that have folks with medical conditions. As well, most (all?) areas are issued LOTS of flashlights (big 'uns) to use in the case of a power outage and they are supposed to test them monthly.
i see in this pic like most of the others there really is no spray paint or damage from vandals at this place that is cool
Last time I was there it had gotten more trashed, and it looked like someone who calls himself "Phantom" had spraypainted his name in a lot of places.
This place is respected around here(not that we like what was happening inside, but the buldings itself), and we normally like to keep it clean, no graffiti or anything. As for Phantom, he was caught in the act and fined ALOT of money, lol.
Yeah, these tunnels are actually just below ground, which is why there were no windows. when you come out of the end of the tunnels, theres a ramp, which goes upward just enough that these tunnels couldnt have any windows.

Theres also a sentence graffittied on one of the walls near Devon hall i believe it is, which is where a young girl was hung in the stairwell that leads down to the tunnels. The sentence is signed by Sally (i think was the name...i know it started with an S) and Shadow because people say they see the girl and her shadow sometimes in Devon Hall...
Not sure if the girl being hung is true, i was just told it. But the grafitti is definitly there.
arent you afrain that a mp will be there? my brother said most of them had nowhere to go so they still hang around there out of habit
good lord people, they are NOT ghosts! they are spirits. but its a beautiful shot in a beautiful landscape.on other sites ive seen floating orbs hangin around too...deffinately creepy-cool.
This photo looks like some sort of ectoplasm a ghost forming.
awsome shot .. nice comp, and contrast
Why did they carry the patients through these tunnels?
These tunnels where used to transport patients on rainy days or the patients that where for any reason unable to be outside. The usage of these tunnels where actually stopped due to staff and patients being assaulted.
I agree, Kassie. Definitely Eerie.
eeww, that looks like a ghost
this picture is reallllly weird..
Whats up with that dark figur on the rleft side of the picture, i think someone was there with you..
took me awhile to get back to this sight but thought i would mention that when my boss was still in college she worked as a gym teacher at pennhurst because her dad was the staff physician, well long story short she needed volleyballs one time and was told to order them suffice to say she worded the order forn wrong and instead of getting a case of 12 balls wound up with 120 cases of 12 balls somewhere in these tunnels is a storage room with all those balls so she says lol thought this was worth a mention
i was just there today, but i only made it into keystone. my friend and i were caught walking around but we weren't fined because they didn't catch us in a building. it was so cool! i'd love to go back at night but if we get caught again, they said we'd be arrested. it's not that it was eerie because the windows are enormous and it was light out, but it was fascinating! they should definitely do tours. show people how far we have (hopefully) come. beautiful property, buildings, etc. i loved it
when i was there there was so much graffiti that it takes away the point of it being scary. you can tell so many people have been there. there is beer cans all over the floor, and packs of cigarettes and even sodas and stuff, and its not scary because you know that people put stuff there. i walked into a bathroom and there was nooses hanging fromt he stalls, but it wasnt scary because they were all in a row, and had a liter of pepsi and a pack of cigarettes underneath it. now that defeats the purpose. but yes the person 'Phantom' is on the walls and stuff in pennhurst a lot. i've never seen the sally and shadow one, but i wil be going bak to look for it.
Looks like a place to go into and never come back.
These tunnels are underground, and branch off throughout the entire campus. They were an easy way to get the handicapped children to and from diffrent buildings. The reason there is no light or windows, is because usually the children (Patients) that needed the tunnels, were deeply sadned by the outside world they couldn't live in, so they were taken throught the tunnels. There is also a smaller series of tunnels underneath the patient tunnels.
BS Marcia - stand back! I'll protect you!
I was there last night and stumbled across a homeless person sleeping in this very same tunnel.-Pennhurst is probablly one of the creepiest places ive been
is that a ghost that is black in very front?
Mazda- That's Motts taking the picture.

Love it!!
What light do you use?
C or D-cell maglite
did you see the man in the picture?yes there is a man!!!
ya that shadow would have been freaking me out a little, thats really crazy though i like the picture you should try going at night sometime to the smoke stacks my friends and i went there at night and up the one road it gets foggy and you can see a group of people outlined toghether and when u go half way up and turn around in the smoke stacks u will get a little glimps of a child looking down over u its hard to see u have to look really hard you wont get a picture though she disapears really fast im not even kidding
does no one read the comments before posting,?the shadow is motts lighting the tunnel.
=/
I had the pleasure of working with a woman in her late 40's that had lived here for most of her life. It had always been her opinion that the tunnels were intended to protect the outside world from her. That society didn't want to see. If that was the intention or not i don't know, but i'm aware of the lasting effect it had. A stark reminder of how we, as humans failed at humanity. Sobering.
the shadow looks almost like someone walking
it's so awesome. i would love to go there
It looks like there is someone walking in the picture the black shadow!
yea theres is someone walking by in this pix. thts a spirit walking by
Most likely the shadow is from the person taking the picture due to using the flashlight.
I'd love to get some still shots of this place , Is there anyone to contact about viewing the buildings. I've always heard that certain areas are open to look around
motts i got to ask in all the places uve been have u noticed anythiong strange like say the feeling of somthing walking behind u when theeres no one there and all that ?

soz i like ghosties and its helping me out abit
it really looks like someone is standing there looking at you taking the picture.
i ran into phantom once while i was there. (or at least some old guy claiming to be Phantom. Honestly, that guy was crazy. Myself and like six others were walking through a tunnel and I had two other friends looking out for people and he started creeping out of the bushes real slow in full camo and night vision goggles. We freaked out but one of my friends started talking to him and he ended up giving us a tour of the place and took us to places like the theatre and the morgue and a lot of the rooms in the main buildings but it started raining and we were by the area he referred to as the 'rape shack' and we were near our car but he tried to split our group up saying that "i know a quicker way, come through this tunnel" but I made sure everyone stayed with me and we got back to the car real fast. He had a walky-talky and was talking to people on his radio that he claimed were his friends and family but it sounded like he was just overhearing static filled conversations. He also pointed at a lot of the graf on the walls and claimed some of the tags to be his friends and family (saying it was his wife and kids doing the tags). He told us a story about a kid that would reach up his anus and rip out his colon and the doctors would have to restitch him but he died within a week. He claimed to have this knowledge due to how he was the first person to get the records out of the filing cabinets. I start to wonder whether he was actually committed to Pennhurst. He kept talking about "back in the day" too and said he would go to Byberry with his friends and roll a queer (meaning" to beat up a gay guy".. i think). He also kept asking one of the girls with us if she had a grandmother as pretty as her, haha. It was a long eventful day and I heard later from a friend that Phantom was arrested for graf and for pushing a filing cabinet off of the roof and onto a police van while being chased. Phantom told us he did this and got away with it which was funny when i found out he got caught weeks later. Anyone else ever meet this creepy old guy who calls himself Phantom?
"rolling a queer" or "rolling a fag" means having a smoke or a blunt, FYI
pennhurst is the kind of thing when you're there you think "there couldn't be ghosts here...ghosts/spirits aren't real" but at the same time, you feel a presence nearby...and part of the reason you think about ghosts/spirits being unreal is because inside you still think they are real...reality is sort of blurry until a while after you leave.....by the way anyone know much about kinsey's (not sure about the spelling )old distilleries? I've been back there sooo many times in every building...i live near there
phantom is legit. ive ran into him once or twice.
the real guy is panzergod. he LIVES there. hes got a room in Limerick building, or i think its limerick. he knows the buildings better then anyone, and if you run into him your lucky. see if he'll give you a tour.
wow it looks like thare is a ghost there... even though i dont believe in ghosts... great pic though
did any1 ever get caught at pennhurst yesterday me and 2 other friends got on the roof of one of the building and slepted there over night i was wokin up by cars driving by is it something i should be concerned about. and i dident see any but is there any guards around there and where do they hang out plz respond people
is the phantom a real guy thats what that bo kid said
also we where walking back to our car and we saw a white dude with white hair and a big white beard what does he look like
Is it just me or dose it look like someone is standing there?
"the real guy is panzergod. he LIVES there. hes got a room in Limerick building, or i think its limerick."
hahah, this will never get old.
and phantom is a real guy, what do you think it is? a ghost spraypainting?
This photo is nothing spectacular see you all believe what this guy is telling you what i see is absolutely nothing the "shadow figure" in the center of the picture is just simply the figure of who ever is taking the photo that is all nothing paranormal in this photo
That shadow looks like a human form
I think three is a black shadow of a man . I can see him very clear.

Nothing to freak out about ;)
awesome i just saved this pic its awesome it has a ghost hehe
I love this cite. I have been following Mott's pictures for a long time. I have never posted, but had to tell you, you people are plain stupid. Why don't you all read before you post. You may just learn something.
this is one of scariest places ive ever seen! i seen some paranormal documentary on pennhurst...omg you couldnt pay me to go into those tunnels. there was an abandoned rolling hospital bed with blood all over it. it was rusted and you can tell its atleast 40 years old. plus they cremated and burried people there.

all the jits that spray paint and litter there are rediculous....seriously yall? you can go hangout and smoke crack somewhere else?
Simple. Yet haunting.
pair of eyes in the dark i see.................
the "walking man" in the pic may be a product of lighting, but it certainly looks eeriely real to me.... wow....
wat is with the apperition on the left of the screan maybe it was a patient trying to find its way out
it looks aghost
the first thing i noticed was the black shadow figure int he left side. Its cearly a male figure because of the brode sholders.
Does nobody read older posts before posting themselves?
Motts says the figure is his shadow......

A ton of posters are convinced the figure is a ghost.........

Therefore, Motts is a ghost.

Hahaha

j/k

I really dig this shot, Motts. it's eerie and oh so captivating. The shadow really gives a spooky location that little extra EEP. =)
Marvelous composition. Love the arrow on the right (even though it's graffiti)... the perfect touch
well they have said this is supposed to be haunted so you could have actualyl caught something but u never no
Lost soul going for the light (freedom) me thinks? Twas my first thought when I saw this.
