Is it true that there is still Electric in Pennhurst, someone told me that one of the Exit signs is still lit up. (ive been there once, but didnt get to see much because I didnt know where to park, I got pics only of the outside)
I don't remember seeing the power on anywhere except for maybe a few street lights.
A few years back there was an exit sign lit up.
i have seen other pics on other sites that show lights on in the canteen
yes, there is still electricity in SOME buildings. when i was in one of the wards, there was a light on in a room that still had a gurney in it.
I always find that to be so odd.......
Maybe they left select lights on for "security" reasons. There are a few closed down restaurants and stores in my area and the power's been on there for a LONG time with no occupants. (too bad I missed out on the three-day demolition project of one old dumpy restaurant)
Sick as it sounds (and as dangerous as it would likely be).....it would be kinda neat to see what kind of fireworks come out of THAT baby if you turned it on in its present state!
Yes pennhurst still has power at some buildings .. when i was there in front of the rockwell building a street light was on .. very erie.
Your a brave man standing under that
Well, Pennhurst did run on its own. They made their own food, they had to store drinking water in big metal containers, they even had their own mourge....I dont see why they should'nt have their own electricity.
I've been there once I am going again in a few weeks though.... I did see an Exit sign still lit up.. And like Researcher said There is one light still on outside of one of the wards closer to the Storage building... Then it basically goes into a dead end.. It Is a Very fun place.
i life nearby and yes, some of the underground passage ways are lit up at night. the creepy thing is that every time i go back...different lights are turned on.
The ceiling light looks like it's gonna fall off pretty soon.
2 yrs. ago i was exploring the tunnels with a few freinds we were in a very long tunnel that was pitch black. eventually we came to an intersection, to the right was a boarded up exit and to the left a long corridor led to a room that was completly lit up! we pulled open the exit to the right and ran scared we had stumbled upon occupied territory. we always thought maybe the light was only on to cause us to do exactly what we did, Get The Hell Out Of There!!
Exit signs can stay lit because they have a back-up battery in the light itself.
haha..sorry, but that made me laugh. The back-up batteries are only good for a certain amount of time. Usually a matter of hours.
Those lights have a very creepy, skeletal look to them. I was fascinated by them, and almost fell a few times because of the distraction!
The Power plant is no longer runing and the lights in the buildings no longer work. What ever newer EXIT signs that have been instaled have built in solar pannels on them.
Many state institutions were self sustaining....the patients farmed the land for food, water treatment facilities were on site & most had generated their own electricity through a "powerhouse" that was usually a short distance from the campus.
The Pennhurst Memorial & Preservation Alliance (PM&PA;) actually rewired some of the buildings to get back electricity. They even installed a new telephone box, until it was destroyed by vandals.
They may want tosave that light for it gets someone...
