Me and my friends took one too. Everyone kept saying that it was possessed
this was one scary and sick place, as i have been on the grounds many times, and attended grade school where former PH residents would up and wander the halls ways until the principal spotted them. my fave was at church, this one old lady (mrs reed, anyone remember her?) would wander in an interupt the priest. i remember grade school dances where they would wander in too.
Dirty looters! At least you left one for Motts to shoot.
i like wheel chairs ;)
Great start; alonely chair.
if anyone hasn't read the story about Roland Johnson you really need to. it has a link here. I never knew what they went thru...surprised they survived.
The history on this place was so sad motts. those links you gave us in the begining of the gallery were really informative and fasinating. Thanks.
someone push me!
this place is sweet ! i did a documentary for video production a couple years ago at pennhurst,
The picures say it all :(
Some Scary stuff!!!!!
scary butt interesting
i havent been but cant wait to go
the lone weel chair
ALL OF YA'LL WHO SAY SMART ASS SHIT, CONSIDER THE KIDS AND THE BABYS WHO WERE TREATED LIKE DOGS, NO WAIT DOGS ARE TREATED BETTER, ITS SOOOO VERY SAD!! THESE PEOPLE WHO DID THIS SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH AND LET EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD WATCH AS THEY SUFFER!!!!
I saw this on ghost hunters. I didn't know people here in the U.S. were treated like this ever. I saw people being treated like this in Mexico. You never forget. She's right. If you had seen something like this with your own eyes you wouldn't say such stupid crap.
The (2) shows I saw this on was Ghost Adventures (travel Ch) & extreme paranormal. I don't think Ghost Hunters has been to Penn State Hosp/school. Anyway, I thought Motts had taken pictures here & even though I've looked at many of his pics through these yrs it takes sometime to go through all of these galleries. People were treated so horrible at these places. Its hard to hear all about this stuff. Its just wrong. There maybe some people that do need to be watched but not treated like animals. Heck the prison population is probably treated better than all these patients in these old asylums. Like someone else mentioned animals are treated better. Its sad that these buildings are left to rot....some should be preserved if nothing to show how horribly these patients were treated. If we don't remember what we did wrong in the 'past' than we are doomed to repeat it all over again. Lets not forget that......Just some very deep thoughts tonight........Thanks Motts.
THIS IS SUCH A SAD PLACE TO GO AND SEE !! I HAVE BEEN HERE AT LEAST 30 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR ,I AM OBSESSED WITH IT AND THE HISTORY ,I READ ALL I CAN AND RESERCH IT .
the lone wheel chair
its scary yet interesting to learn the past of this place but i think its sad that they are going to turn it into a place so people could be entertained by the horrifing looks of it i bet there are still spirits of those patients that were torchered there and just want to rest in peace i dont think they want to be disturbed by all the comotion and photo taking there will be once people enter what will be soon called pennhurst institution of fear
Just finished watching Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel where they visited Pennhurst. I grew up not far from PH and often heard many horrible stories about it. I moved out of the area in 1990 and can't believe how the state or individuals have let such a large and historic institution deteriorate. After seeing Ghost Adventures not sure if I'd want to visit there-can't believe they'd make into such an attraction as 'PH Institute of Fear'-do they not have any respect for those poor individuals who suffered while there? C'mon people, get real and think of something respectable to do with this place instead of just trying to make a quick buck!
Wow me and friends look at this thing and got scared
for some reason every time i look at that chair i get chills down my spin and i feel sick to my stumick! i feel so sorry for what those kids had to go through. im just more glade that i wasnt one of them (not to be rude or selfish) Im 15 and if that happened to me i would stay there and hunt down anyone or anything that caused me pain while i was trapped in that hell hole
People who say stupid things and make comments about this place do not realize what went on behind closed doors. You are sick and disgusting people if you can look at these photos and laugh or think this place is "sweet" Take it from someone who knows a survivor of Pennhurst who can live to tell you the horror they went through. It is far from sweet. In no way should any person be treated the way these individuals were, and there is no excuse what so ever for our society to justify the living hell these people went through!

So before you go and talk your smart comments and make your jokes read the stories, do the research and put yourself in their shoes. Not so funny anymore is it???
This place is a very interesting place. I have gone to it with friend and we read/watched everything we could find and it is sad how one kid they interviewed in 1968 said the only person in the world he wants to visit him is god. The history of pennhurst is amazing, sad, and interesting. All the people that make fun of what happen and destroy the buildings are ignorant as all hell!!!
Just saw the episode of Ghost Adventures (travel channel) I was horrified at the stories of the "treatment" the residents received. But the part that really made me sick was when the Dr related that it was POLICY to pull all of a resident's teeth if they were biters. Can you imagine? I think the majority of the staff did the best they could with what was provided. Caring for dependant patient's is very difficult. And to care for ones that can not help themselves at all is overpowering. During nursing training as part of my pediatric rotation, I was assigned to a private facility for profoundly mentally and physically challenged patients. The facility is immaculate, each patient gets a bath every day. They are dressed in clean clothes and gotten up. It is the best example of what this care should be like. But we also took a field trip to a place that was very much like the Pennhurst of the news tape.
Before you make nasty/silly/juvenile or hateful comments, just think a minute about how much care was needed by every resident on a daily basis. The reality is daunting.
Ummmm...Ghost Hunters is on SciFi, not the travel channel...
She didnt say Ghost Hunters she said Ghost Adventures. They are two different shows there bud.
The photoes of this place hurt my hart what could this poorsoles have done... nothing andtheywereleft to phsicaly rot witha staff of 8 for a populace of 3,500!
This place has a sad history. Much to my further sadness, there were more places just as bad, and even worse than this. google it, and I'm sure the info will give you nightmares...
Ghosthunters has investigated PH, but only within the past year or so.
I have several books on Pennhurst. the report to the state dated 1922-1924 if interested I'm going to post them on ebay around Oct. 15th 2011.
I just want every one who has possiblie seen a episode on television or has read books or maybe even seen videos or photos to ask yourself one thing if it was you who had to live tjere would you like for someone to make a mockery about your life and put all of the bad things on a television show to get ratings.i think in my own opinion as a mother with a child that is mentally disable that if it was me and wheather or not if my child survived or passed away in that hellhole I would look in to having that place declared a momument maybe its just me but I thing those children deserve that much and also there families.
its very much intact. i am impressed
first of all,why do people keep shouting?? secondly, stop bloody stealing!!!!
It's so, so sick to see that helpless children and grown children,(but still mentally children) and some very normal people were abused so badly. Unfortunately , abuse, nasty talk, spankings, yelling, silent abuse, neglect, ignoring, no empathy.it goes on everyday in some form all around us. People choose to ignore it. Please pray for the children and volunteer at group homes if given the chance. Speak up about abuse...
