to me, this is what draculas castle probably looked like
is the roof metal?
It's copper, if I'm not mistaken.
Indeed it is...they re-roofed the catholic cathedral in St. Paul last year & it had a shiny copper dome for all of 3-4 months before it started to whether. Now it's already accumulating it's green mantle of verdegris, though it has nothing on THESE roofs! ^_^
It is reminiscent of The Tower of Terror at MGM is Disney World!
You don't just have a way with photos Motts - sometimes you have a real way with words, too...
Beautiful, yet sinnister looking...
Why were these buildings so dreary and depressing looking? We're only looking at the pictures and making comments; can you imagine someone saying to you that you're going to be living here? That depresses me just thinking about it!
Just love the looks of the buliding totally awsome
it's not the dracula's castel...and i know that because i am living in romania :)...and dracula hadn't a castel:))..i don't thing is a cathedral because a cathedral look's different...so what do you think?:))
You're right phloo...its not a cathedral or Dracula's castle.

Its Buffalo State Hospital.
My mom Virginia Walters was committed at this hospital at the age of 9. I belive year 1958, she was discharged at age 25. She always speaks of a doctor who took care of her named Dr.Gerald Juan. My mom is a beautiful person and liked my everyone. The stories she tells me sometimes bring me to tears. I want to get a copy of her medical records to read really why she was admitted to this hospital, because there are a lot of conflicting stories. My mom has never been in the hospital again for mental illness snice she was discharged. I do know my mom was very much abused by her parents. If there are any retired nurses or doctors that read any of the comments on the website and might know any info that would slove this mystery that i have had for 31 years please contact me through my email address. cgambrell75@hotmail.com
Most of the medical records are, to my knowledge, still sitting inside of the asylum. I imagine you could try contacting the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, since, as next of kin, I think you would be legally entitled to view her records, although, granted, its quite possible that nothing short of a court order will get them to go into that building and retrieve those files.
What a great photo !!!

Well, after the comment by Christene and the previous from Gloria, I think I'm gona have to get off this gallery. Just bothering me to much.
Please forgive me.
Could someone tell me why there are crosses on the windows?
It is just the windrow frame. Nothing really special.
This is why architects cannot deal with "normal people".

Its a building designed my H. H. Richardson (known for Romanesque Architecture)...its supposed to be imposing, like ROMAN architecture.

Question... How can you make an assessment on a building when you have not experienced the inside?

and...

How can a building with so many windows be dark, dreary, and depressing?

Please take time to consider what you may be inanely babbling on the internet before you do so.

Thank you.
Actually, if you do see the inside, its not dreary in the least (well, aside from the fact that its rotting now). Quite bright, in fact.
I totally agree with you Chris!
I may sound like a freak but I would die to just see what it looks like in that hospital. I love all this haunted asylum stuff. It fascinates me...
The Richardson Center Group has issued their plans to redevelop this property and restore most of the buildings on it. Soon, there will be an opportunity for anyone to come into these buildings and gain some sense of what HH Richardson had intended.
That copper roof is worth a fortune.
