The rounded corners of a Kirkbride are quite unique.

Ever since I first found out about Kirkbride this year I've wanted a house built in this style.I don't think we have buildings of that type anywhere near me.They are incredible though.Truly unique.
The paint chips remind me of "The Birds".
I'm sure I'm completely off here, due to when this architectural style came out, it seemed as though the welfare of parents wasn't exactly at the top of the list, but I was just thinking how the Kirkbride style could have been specially developed for state hospitals to prevent the patients from being able to injure themselves on regular sharp-cornered walls. I guess it was just cause it reminded me of those special rounded corner chairs. Although I'm sure the architecture had nothing at all to do with that.
Barbara, I was thinking along the same lines...except for convenience.
If a wheelchair's wheel went wonky, so to say, it would probably move easier off of a rounded corner than a 90 degree angle, yes?
this reminds me of "feng shui", a asian strategy to bring harmony to a place. i wonder that thomas kirkbride did know about the way of feng shui when he created the kirkbride-style but maybe intuition he knew about the harmony-effect of round corners. so maybe he already had a sense of feng shui. : )
Back in college (mid '80's) I had a job working in a group home for autistic people. One of the by-products, or symptoms, of autism is self-mutilation, and we had a patient who frequently banged his head against the walls.

One day he discovered that the *corners* of the walls produced much better results....
I wonder what the little door in the wall is for?
I wish the hospital where I worked had rounded corners! It would have made things a lot less, um, bloody, shall we say?
it's more organic and feels comfortable and non-threatening somehow.
The little door looks like a pass-through door. I have seen them in doctors offices for specimen collection and in churches for offering collection.
