Holy sh*t! That's amazing and a scary thought...don't want to know what would happen to those few people. Great find Motts!
Why do they need a "giant" autoclave. Maybe I am slightly dumb, but inquiring minds like mine want to know...
See, it's pictures like these that make me wonder "what exactly is the point of making these things so big?" perhaps it was a secret torture chamber.
Oh my, this truly takes the cake . . . . :-(

Please, someone, anyone, look up the word "autoclave" and put on some antiperspirant whilst calming down! Ya don't put people in autoclaves, for the love of Pete! Ya gots huge dishwashers in restaurants and ya don't put people in THEM, do you? Well, *I* do sometimes for fun when I'm bored, but the rest of you "normal" people don't. A larger piece of sterilizing equipment fits in more pieces of medical equipment to sterilize so's the "lazy fat-assed nurses" (grrrr....) can save time and get more done. After going through an autoclave the pieces are sanitary and sterile and can be used again. Just like in real live "normal" hospitals where all you "normal" people go.

A definitely non-normative person
Lynne, you know what I hate the most about the way people think when it comes to these facilities? Patients (not as often) and their families (very often) who complain about the "service" in hospitals...a nurses duties do not include making sure that your coffee is not decaf, fetching you the morning paper, or looking up numbers for you to call. "Service" is something you get at a hotel, or a garage, not a hospital. A nurses job is VERY important, and in the time it takes a nurse to fetch your paper, or neatly arrange your personal artifacts, the person next door could be in life-threatening danger from any number of possible incidents. Here are just a few which are common in all hospitals: stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, fall, anaphylaxis (acute allergic reaction), choking, panic attacks, aneurysm, dangerous drug interactions, and the like. Nurses have a lot more than just one person to look out for on any given night, it just irks me to think of people being so self-centered that things like this happen. What are a nurses duties? How about making sure you don't die, or become profoundly disabled from something as simple as laying on your arm for too long as in the case with some operating room clients. All nurses take care to make sure that the little things are done for people, but people must realize that they are not in a hotel, they are not at wal-mart, and they are in a fast-food chain, in the hospital the customer is not always right. Forgive me if I sound stern, but it just seems like people want to be first in line, all the time, no matter what, with no consideration for the well being of others.
And as far as comments about lazy fat-assed nurses, I know there are plenty of fat-ass nurses out there, but they do more in a day than most people do in a week. Nursing is not a cake job by ANY means, and to disrespect those who are trying to care for you is just wrong. Anyone with a shred of decency should be able to see this.
Whoa... Way to heavy! Dr. Sketch perscribes some humor for this picture: I don't think that's the easiest way to sterilize people, is it? :D
Just to throw in, it isn't always just doing a large load of equipment; sometimes large items need to be sterilized too. Having received burns from items out of an autoclave before (my own stupidity), I can't imagine how anyone would think this could be used for torture: no one would survive it! I'd rather be forced to think about sitz baths all day than think about being in a running autoclave!
that is a huge autoclave, OMG, have not seen one that size before,
Um...I tend to agree that the "lazy, fat-assed nurses" comment was un-called for. I've worked in healthcare for 20 years. There are NO piece-of-cake jobs in nursing. Just surviving the stress of making life and death decisions is a job in itself. Anything to help make healthcare workers jobs easier is OK in my book.
listen if you dont all stop it ill put you in the giant human autoclave torture device from hell, maybe......
HEY ya know, they had this as the "upper crust" Hosptital, maybe the doctors wanted their cars auto claved, what I mean.. dont you want your lincon or caddy to be hypo-cleaned?
Correct me if I am wrong, but linens are autoclaved too. I am guessing they either had a lot of biocontaminated laundry, or the head honcho decided to go for the "bigger is better" motto, so he could shove it in the faces of those "other" hospitals.
"Mine's bigger than yours"
Yeah, i'm pretty sure you could fit around 3 to 4 people in that one hahaha. Mr Motts, in your explorations, have you seen any larger autoclaves than this?
I really don't think so... I might have seen one or two others that are close to this size (Byberry's maybe?), but not bigger.
Isn't the one at Belchertown pretty massive?
From what i understand, the idea of Haverford being an "upper-crust" place isn't exactly correct. Sure its in a very affluent area but any upper class person with mental issues i could imagine going to a private institution such as Friends Hospital or the several others in the area, not a public state hospital such as Haverford...
I am mad they are demolishing it it makes me sick to my stomach
Hey benz, are you that little 13 year old thats been annoying me on myspace?
no.
Some rust.
I think people should stick to commenting about the damn pictures and how exquisite they are and PLEASE stick to what you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Neo-I know it's a few years late in coming, but damm-props to you for your above rant! I've felt like saying this to patients (more like their families) for YEARS! (and some doctors too!!)
I remember that autoclave from Hilltop but i don't remember which floor that autoclave was on.
Basement, if you make a right coming out of the morgue its across the main hall to your left just past the stairwell
holy sh1t Neo, calm down, its just a game
THAT'S A BIG AUTOCLAVE! I wonder what it would be like to be put inside it and it get turned on, What a horrible way to get murdered huh? I know that's kinda dark of me but what do you expect, I'm thinking about house on haunted hill AND listening to it's soundtrack WHILE looking at these pics...
there's one about that size at H*nson PCH. (i mean i think its about that size)
this used to be right near my house. The space behind the door was big enough to walk in. It was super creepy.
That is quite a cool snap. There are MUCH bigger autoclaves than this one. ALCON Labs (owned by Nestle since 1974 or so) has a GIANT one that is not used in its Ft. Warth, TX location. Pretty cool looking too. And ominous. In fact that whole place made me nervous. Worked as a temp there once...

Also looks (kinda) like a nuclear bunker access door or airlock compartment door as well. Still, Motts, you rock on these snaps man!

Question: What is the first letter of the word "abandoned?"
