The Hole

Boy would it suck to accidentally step in this stagnant well. It's tough to see in the pitch black basement!

shit man. thats creepy. Im surprised it was never locked and sealed before it was abandoned. Wonder how deep it goes.
The scariest shot I've seen on this site. Don't know why, it just looks like it would be deep as hell...or like a hand would shoot out and pull you in....brrrr....creeepy
OH MY!!! *major willies*
I grew up in MD And visited Glenndale many times.
There are tunnels going between som of the buildings that got flooded out. This is most likely one of those.
No, this is in the center of the main building, it goes to the basement, some form of disposal. The tunnels running back and forth are steam pipes.
Could this be a sump pump device? Most places here in the "d.c. swamp" are wet. The older bldgs were prepared for wet basements. Very scary and good photo. Please be careful in your wanderings.
Holy S***! Dude, that's cool. Awsome shot!
AWESOME PHOTOGRAPHY AND VERY CREEPY
LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING SHOULD POP OUT ANY MOMENT. PLEASE DON'T STAND TOO CLOSE.
I used to believe--as a child--that monsters lived under my bed, and in my closet. Now I am glad I didn't have a watery hole in my floor, as well. I would have been a psychologist's nightmare as an adult.
yikes! can you imagine if you fell in there! oh what a nightmare!
I am a psychologist's nightmare, regardless of the absence of a watery hole in my floor or monsters under my my bed.
Glad I never found that in the middle of the night while wandering around there.
I was thinking (oh wow!) and I figured that why this scares me so much is that I hate swimming in lakes if I can't see the bottom - I'm always afraid a dead fish will float up against me, or worse, a dead body. Or that I'll step on one that's sunk to the bottom. When I was 7 or so I was swimming in this lake at my aunt and uncle's cottage and I was in shallow water and saw a trash can lid on the bottom. Scared the heck out of me, cause it looked like the plug for the lake and I didn't want to get sucked under. I hate dirty water and not knowing what's there, so stepping in this would totally scar me for life.
I used to be terrified of the plug in the tub. Absolutely terrified.

Also; one time I was swimming in a lake, and no matter how deep it is here, you can't see the bottom (Saskatchewan. Mmm. Algea.). ... so one time I stepped on something slimy, that collasped underneath me. I still have no idea whether it was a cardboard box or a carcuss of a dead bird. ... not that either of them really makes any sense. Boxes don't hold up and dead birds float.
My point is, I tohtally have no idea as to what the hell it was.
^ ick! Sounds awful. The other day I was wading in a shallow part of this river to get to a sandbar, and this white piece of cloth (likely a shirt) was lying on the bottom. It just looked so creepy!
Shit, I'd put the cover back on and walk away.
This almost looks like a porthole on a sunken ship
So that's NOT a water drinking well RIGHT? And if it was I just found the other causes of insanity and TB!
Stay Out. Toxic Asbestos Construction. I will find You
It looks like the tube on the right might be an over flow. But I don't know what the thing is in the center.
This also reminds me of a place I used to work at. The building was by the river, and there were sewer lids that we would have to lift and climb down in to close vales to stop the river water from coming in the basement when the river would flood. You would have to access this from the 1st floor, by time you climbed down in to the vale you were a story and a half under ground.
Nothing more than a wishing well. (LOL) Throw in a penny, and all your dreams will come true.
The abyss
It almost looks like a shipwreck.
the hole????
I was there the other night..its lik 4 footdeep..We took a long peice of wood and hit bottom..Not deep at all...
Hmm.... One word comes to mind... CHUD....
that is really creepy!!!
was the cover off when you saw it...knowing my luck i'd fall right into it..
Where exactly is that, someone said "main building"... and by that I'm guessing adults, what floor?...ground?
The cover looks like it's right off to the right of the whole. I am sure at one point some one took it off to peak down. It should be covered up though.
it looks like a strange mist rising frome that hole......
Funny how an open well might have mist coming off of it... Mine does the same freaking thing, and nobody points it out!
Yeah, but you didn't kill and dismember all the people like they regularly did (and apparently still do) in institutional facilities; otherwise there would be little ghostly mists all the heck over the derned place.
Shows what you know... My body count just keeps getting higher! :D
Dear Doctor Sketch... If you notice a few extras on the pile it's only temporary. ;)
omfg.. i have to see this hole... I WILL SEE THIS HOLE!!!!
here in washigton we havea rad old abandonned vinager plant.. well theres a base ment that is flodded its BLACK in sun light .. it was liek 5 feet deep? its the worst fellin in the world seein taht place.. it ssoo awfful.. ahah
Probably a flooded nuclear fallout shelter or crawl/scuttle from a lower level. Every building in DC area started getting them in 40's. Most of these are around the grounds. Come to think of it, they probably go from inside to outside of buildings for various reasons.
this is soooo cool lol
To me the creepiest thing about this photo isn't the depth of the water or falling into it in the dark so much as the stagnant water itself, just sitting there, brewing, full of strange life forms that live in darkness....growing and thickening in the old, dirty water. A truly alien world in that hole!
omg thats really scary i wouldnt want to have been there once before!
Anyone got diving equipment and the know how to use it? This should be explored. It's the final frontier.
where is that hole at? floor number? we entered through the adults morgue..
joshpine- if you hate drains, you'd really hate my favorite swimming hole. It's at the base of a big waterfall at an abandoned power station in Conway, MA. There is a big whirlpool under the falls, strong enough to drag you into it and to the bottom, but not so strong that you can't swim out of it when you need air. There's nothing so refreshing on a hot, humid day as to let a whirlpool suck you down to the bottom of a cold river! jasonpine, you also mention stepping into something gross in the lake. The same thing happened to me, except I was on these abandoned railroad tracks; I was looking ahead and suddenly my foot sank into something that immediately REEKED. I looked down and my foot was down inside a rotting dog! I can still remember it all too vividly!
Have explored all the buildings of the Glen Dale property hospital late at night.
Never heard or saw anything strange, but you get a weird feeling walking through all the different buildings with a few friends and nothing but a flashlight shining the way ahead of you. At any moment you think your going to have someone coome up behind you in the darkness, or shine your light inon of the abanded rooms and see something, or maybe here sceams or a strange noise. If you want to do some exploring and be kinda freaked out, i strongly suggest that you check out Glen Dale hospital.
OMG, isabeats...just the thought...<gag>. I accidentally leaned my hand on some smashed, big ass bug of some sort...that was enough for me!
is that hole filled with water or am i just stupid?
This is, by far, one of the creepiest shots I've seen.
i once fell in an uncovered drain in the school yard filled with dirty , gross , disgusting water . not to mention the horrible smell . up to my chest . i thought i would never get kleen again .
I live 10mins away from the Hosp, I used to bike over there and roam around/inside the buldiing... and never saw anything like this, I might have to go back there to find it. An' its good pic there.
maybee it led to the septic tank
the septic tank! you couldn't have upset me more. there is really nothing to say for you.
hell I'd swim in it
Holy crap that looks creepy I would'ent go there
Me and a few of my friends snuck in an walked the halls let me tell you....CREEPY!!!!! We had some good footage but didnt stay long. Hey if anyone knows the information on the hole, like what it is or is it a stair case and is that water in there cause it looks alot like water.....just post some info and i will check back soon
"law man dan" runed the fun we may want to go to a privet chat room
I want to go into the hole
It puts the lotion on its skin or ells it gets the hose again.
i like that shot
the colors are cool
"The Ring" any one?

and btw, when i went i found that hole too and uncivered it, i threw in some glow sticks, i saw them glide down for about 10 feet, and then they just dissapeared, i tell you what, it freaked me the fuck out, i left after that.
are those 2 of the manual hand drills hanging on that grate right above the hole?
Paranormal: Those are the hand cranks for a hospital bed. The old ones worked with 2 handcranks. Called a Gatch bed, probably named after the inventor
omg!! i seen that thing in the hospital i had no idea what it was...it was all the way on the top floor
lol nevermind i see it says in the basement there must of been 2
that is creepy .wonder how deep it is?
Reminds me of the movie 'Changeling' ...
dont go to here its borded up and theres mad cops
Isabeats that rotting dog is soooo yuck!!! What breed??? ; )
Shh! Don't say that name! Bad things happen.
I wonder if anyone has fallen in there. (Especially if all you got is a tiny flashlight in a pitch black basement) Is it a well or is it a service hole that goes down to the steam tunnels?
Motts,... that deep black hole... is either very dirty water or its black soil that does have steel pipes and other steel debris that is stuck in it.

Motts, you do have an artistic passion for taking thought provoking pictures of old buildings.
Ugh! Imagine falling in it.

>.<
wait a second first
J- I was there the other night..its lik 4 footdeep..We took a long peice of wood and hit bottom..Not deep at all...
and then

Which is it? I'm kinda curious and 4 feet and 10 feet are 2 totally different things
Yeah. That's what I would like to know. Is it 4 feet deep or is it 10 feet deep?

This must be a manhole that goes down to the tunnels.

You'd probably gag to death if you drank that water.
I've been looking at this site for the past 3 days and that is the only picture that has made my stomach knot up.
Here's another freaky picture of this hole I found..... (I still like Motts picture better though)

well,ah,thats........
not..............
strangest thing,
but its' a beautiful thing :
as I had stated before,I love murky underground water. So strange though..
Regarding the comments about flesh on the bottom,in tech school(yes,1971)the young man who sat next to me told me of an experience one summer in an outdoor pool.
He said he felt something when he dove to the bottom. He dove to the bottom again with his eyes open and found a blueish bloated body on the pool floor. He reported it to the life guard. No one had been reported missing.
Regarding the comment about suction on a stream bottom,I knew a girl in Sunday School(yes,1968)who drown that way.It took me decades to track the story down.It seems Bond Bread on the hill overlooking Tacony Creek(Phila.)at times took in water that way.
She was about 13.Her brother hanged himself in a Florida jail cell the summer before. He was 16.
I'm surprised at Lynn's comment about institutions killing people and cutting them up,though its' true (don't forget to experiment on them first!)
im from b-wick md wow thats creepy
thats creppy with my luck idd probley end up falling in that someone should liek weld that shut haha
This hole needs to be explored! Anybody got any scuba diving equipment or a water pump to empty this hole? But a much simpler way would be to use a sewer video inspection camera. That would do the trick! Maybe this is where the government hides top secret things!
Kinda makes you wonder whats down there. ooooooooo
The "Ring" anybody?
Again, my compliments to the photographer. The perfect image to correctly capture Heart Ache, Fear, Dread and Curiousity all in one.
Beware of holes, hahah.
i live next to the bike trail thats behind it so im gonna bike over with my friend whos gone through it already
hole shit man that's fuckin scary!
it would suck to fall down there. all dark and stuff. scare the crap outta me. creepy but cool to!
Amytiville 3 with Lori Loughlin and Meg Ryan...that's what i thought of when I saw this pic. The greenish hue to the water reminds me of the hole in the basement of the Amytiville house in part 3...not a good thing at all!!
I was exploring the basement in my apartment building the other day. We have a room with fire system pumps and pipes and a big metal lid in the floor. I immediately thought of "the hole" at Glenn Dale Hospital LOL. Anyway, with a shovel I pried open the lid and wouldn't you know it, it looks like the same damn scary hole. Ours is about 2.5 feet in diameter with a drop pipe off to the side just like in the picture, and goes down roughly 7 to 10 feet deep. It is rigged up with a high-low level alarm. Sump pump, water well or fire system reservoir, I really don't know!
this is a perfectly good reason NOT to go creeping around this place at night!! I can see the headlines now...''kids falls in a wet hole, hits head, and drowns.'' imagine the stories that would follow, and some poor security gaurd would loose his job from being negligent on the job.
That pictures is scary. Truly frightening for reasons I cannot even articulate.

You are brilliant, Motts.
I get sort of a wistful feeling from most of these photos of dilapidation but this one scares the piss out of me... in a good way.

Great photos, all of them.
That really is horrible thinking about falling down there.
omfg you should've thrown something in there =]
thats definitely asking for some serious health problems...
Hell, I think my toes are permanently curled now :p

(And Shawnerr - thanks a million for the link. You evil swine...lol!)
LMAO, you're welcome.
Maybe someone alread fell in there and their body is rotting at the bottom
**Has fainted** :p
dude, i would so want to check the bottom of that out. to bad i live ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY FROM HERE!!!
OOOOH!!!!!! Kiddie pool!!!
**ugh** gives me chills
I drive past this place every day going and coming from owrk and it still to this day gives me the creeps.. I swear I see shadows but I know it's just my imagination.
Ok, I think I may know the answer to what this hole is. This may be what is called a Grinder Pump. It's a system that collects toilet waste water along with toilet paper, napkins, diapers etc. and when the level reaches high enough, it turns on and grinds it up to a liquid and pumps it out to the sewage holding tanks. They are usually equipped with an alarm panel for overflow alert. A diagram can be seen here http://www.aquatechsys...e/popup_col_a_01.jpg
I have been there nice place
Maybe they used it as a squat toilet!
tie a maglight to a piece of fishing line and drop it down, see how deep and whats going on
Its a pump pit! Either sewage/medical waste or sump (ground water). Standard in commercial buildings
I have seen this place and yes it looks scary horroifying and yes if you do believe in ghosts this is a good place to see them so far ive seen 3 one of a huge black dog that roams the second floor and then into a wall caught that on tape, the other was a black mass moving from one door to the other on tape, and on inferred cam I caught a figure that looks like a man I will say this one time if you go do not go alone!!!! trust me.
there are some of these holes in some small out houses in the forest. there are greenhouses and other overgrown gardens that are all over grown now.
that is 1 hell of a hole
DOWN IN A HOLE !!!!! ( Alice in Chains)
