Reminds me of early post war Prague.
Even in a color photo, this shot looks like a still right out of a film. A movie studio lot could not come close to making such a scene like this.
oh..my goodness this place is scary
That's my second favorite IMAGE! It's so pretty.

Betty you haven't seen nothing yet.
Yeah just went there last nite OMG ii was scared shitless i went with 5 of my friends and all we had was a spotlight off of a camera phone OMG NOT Kool BUT i do have to admit we seen everything you have on pics BUT THE BASEMENT THATS CUZ WE WERE SCARED!
yo wassup, my house is right across the street from this stuff lol. i was friggin terrified when i moved there X[
these pictures are fantastic. I used to go there in 88-90 (I'm old as hell) and I still have nightmares about being in there. Definitely always felt like we were being watched and/or followed. I remember seeing a chain link 'cage' in the middle of the floor in the basement in the building on the same side of the street as the security trailer. Of course, I got inside & acted possessed to scare the shit out of my friends, but got a horrible sensation. Anyone interested/fascinated with Glenn Dale should see the movie "Session 9". Takes place in an abandon hospital and it could have been filmed at Glenn Dale. Thanks for letting me relive some great (but scary as hell) memories!
Has anyone ever heard of Waverly Hills TB Sanitarium in Kentucky? I think I remember Lynne mention it one time on this site. I saw a special on tv last week about this place and it was really interesting. They interviewed x-caretakers and x-patients. They said they used to open patients' chests, break their ribs , and try to treat the lungs when they had TB. The program was good but just listening to the information, I had to wonder how "primitive" they were in medicine many years ago.
Session 9 was filmed at Danvers State Hospital.
from that balcony that you see on the left is where me and 3 others heard a girl scream 3 times from the woods.
I love your pics! I grew up in GlennDale and me and my friends spent many late nights "going through GlennDale hospital" scared out of our minds, we were all over that place--this was in 1985-1987. I remember someone smashed a jar of jelly in that place and it looked like blood! Then we heard the police were using it for training and we never went back.
The building is beautiful and scary. It would be nice if they could fix it up. Better still maybe a good scary movie!!!!!!!!
This building looks the the building in THE MOVIE RED ROSE!!!!!!!
Breathtakingly beautiful...
I have visited the hosipital a few times and needless to say i will NEVER go back. There ARE spirits haunting that place and the proof of about 20 grown men to prove it.
The spirits there are known to follow you home!
me and 3 of my friends went there in january, first of all we got a 4th member which was a dog then as we finally made a way in we were chased by cops so we ducked in a small house where we immediately heard banging but noone was there i took a picture then and it was clear after i uploaded it, it was covered in a strange fog that appears to be a dog and a evil face then when we finally made it to the car the dog disappeared.... has anyone else had a similar encounter????? email me at tommysmommy5605@yahoo.com
I have no doubts that Glenn Dale Sanitorium is haunted. Any place where people suffered and died in who knows what conditions is likely to be...
You guys shouldnt go in there........I used to work for the government and when they shut the complex down in 1982 They hired me to go into the adult hospital and inspect it to see how much it would cost to bring it up to code and when I was on the 5th floor stairway getting ready to come down something jolted me and I fell down a flight of stairs........................I am never going back!!!
I did some research and I found out that the 5th floor was where they kept the crazey people after the tubercolosis infection started to die out!!!!!!
Used to go up there when I was in high school. Drinking on the roof and stuff. Almost got arrested leaving there one night and found out the District of Columbia owns the property. Making trespassing a Federal offense. Never went back again. Have Fun/scary memeries of the place though.
Also, the place is PACKED with asbestos. Making it not so healthy to be around.
A lot of good imagination. Now how about renovating it and taking some more pictures. Of course do this after we get some film maker to make a scary movie and make the money available to restore it.
it's where we live.
WoW. I grew up in Maryland (and in Prince Georges county) and never knew this place existed.
Beautiful brick work on this building.
Larry, in case you check back, you are correct the brickwork is fabulous. I grew up ON the Sanitarium grounds, leaving there in 1964 when my father got another job. All the buildings were brick, and one part that I remember very well were the covered walkways between some of the residences' buildings. The arches were gorgeous. I have long wished that the place would be renovated.
@ Adria: Thanks for the feedback. I too would like to see these buildings saved & reused. They must have been impressive in 1964. Given the fact these photos were taken in 2005, I wonder what the state & status of this facility is today.
I WAS APATIENT AT THIS HOSPITAL IN THE EARLY 70'S,4 ONLY A FEW MONTHS,IT WAS CALLED MT.WILSON HOSPITAL THEN @WAS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE ,I WAS THERE IN WINTER MONTHS,@LEFT EARLY SPRING,MET SOME VERY NICE PEOPLE @STAFF THERE.SORRY ITS GOING TO RUINS,IF ANY1 WASTHERE AT THIS TIME MAYBE U CAN WRITE A NOTE@ I WILL CHECK BACK
Perhaps you were in Mount Wilson State Hospital in Pikesville? It was located Northwest of Baltimore and closed in the 1980s; the place is now the North Oakes Retirement Community.

Glenn Dale is about an hour south of Mt. Wilson.
why is it....every building thats abandoned is haunted? just curious?

i've been exploring for a while (mostly asylums) and i've never heard or have seen anything?? i think its to much sci-fy channel for the children...
HEY! MOUNT WILSON IS LOCATED IN REISTERSTOWN MARYLAND. IT WAS NOT DEMOLISHED. IT HAS BEEN RENOVATED AND IS NOW NORTH OAKS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY. THE MAIN HOSPITAL STILL STANDS, HAS BEEN CHANGED A LITTLE, BUT ITS STILL STANDING. IT HAD CLOSED IN JUNE 1981, AND IT STOOD ABANDONED FROM 1981 TO 1990. FELL INTO DISREPAIR, SOME BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN TORN DOWN, BUT ITS STILL THERE. GO TO FACEBOOK TYPE IN MOUNT WILSON HOSPITAL. IT COMES UP! YOU CAN SEE PICS. CHRIS
My daughter had a dance recital there in 1980. Only a few patients were left. They rented out the stage to the dance school. Once it was a beautiful hospital and grounds, so I hear.
