Inbound Transmissions

Inbound Transmissions

The center of the satellite dish. I assume the rounded piece collected information reflected off the sides of the dish and reflected them down into the center pedestal-type structure, where a pyramid shaped hole was left in the middle.

I was surprised at the absence of a light on top, the sky was full of low flying aircraft.

I wonder if you can get Sky TV on that thing :-)
Yeah, you've got it right on how it worked. In the hole would have been a data collector that would have translated the analog signal into digital and passed it on to a computer. I can think of two reasons it didn't have a light: the light might have interfered with transmission, and if this was a secret at the time it was put up they wouldn't want anything to identify it. After it closed down they probably just forgot to put a light on it...
Its a shame because this thing is now full of grafitti in that center section. How people got up there, i'll never know.
if anybody reads this and has older pics please post them on here or something im tryna find out more about the history of this iv'e been on that satellitle many of times but it's just been recently not when the buildings were up i also heard there was underground places but they put concrete in which i've never seen because i've only been their in the dark . peace
how do you get up there?
you must have guts to go to all these freaky places btw
That's a sub-reflector, in the center of the antennas primary reflector there is a large "post" (called a feed horn) that houses the LNA's (Low Noise Amplifiers). You have it right in your description I just wanted to add the industry terms of the parts. Great photos and thanks for sharing them. I should have visited this place before I left Maryland...
Yep, thats' the thing.
Thats' what does it. AS friends told me years ago , the dish is 'only' a reflector or "catcher' that reflects the signals back up to the feed horn
