The facility is located some distance from any main roads in a residential neighborhood, so it was peacefully quiet back here.

This facility was used by none other than LJB to direct the Vietnam War. We build this system in Mountain View, California at Ford Aerospace, Space & Recovery Systems. We also built and flew the KH satellites that provided the images. The hop was from Vietnam to a ship off shore, then to Hawaii to McClellan AFB and then on to Washington, DC. This system (Compass Link) provided secure voice, data and imagery at about 5 MHz. Very fast for 1968-1975.

"LBJ" is Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States from 1963-69.

This may be a stupid question, but here goes. Is that actually the bottom half of Orion in the top right corner? If so, how did you manage to capture it at that time of day?

The inside would consist of a large space in the base and a small room near where the dish pivots, which still holds some electronic equipment... I returned last year in the day time and I have photos, but who knows when I will be able to get to them... I'm sure there are others on the web somewhere though.

Orion's Belt is in the upper right portion of the photograph. Cool !!!

i'm on this site all the time.. and this is the first time i'm seeing this photo.

while i spend most of my time glancing at the more sinister photos i must say.. this is AMAZING. i think i've found my new computer background.
