it looks like someone is standing way in the back ground, in the dark place.
no it doesnt, but it looks like my TG symbols there... na im jokin' it does look like someones standing there
yeah I see it too, hehehe, it reminds me of Samara from The Ring.
it really does look like there is someone back there just waiting to grab you
i think we should all meet in one certain room the night of halloween
Not a bad idea nightwolf, but I think on Halloween the guards are on much higher alert - it'd be near impossible not to get caught - trust me, I know lol.
Yeah folks, Halloween isn't the greatest night to play at the Berryland Funpark. The police just about set up camp in both counties in the usual parking spots, entrances, and exits.
Plus, the place is full of kids looking for a cheap scare.
yea halloween is deffinatly not a good night i heard that sundays are the best nights.. and weekdays because they think that kids go late on weekends
Nights are okay if you just want to hang, but the daytime is where it's at.
Daytime, What is that?
I didn't see anybody standing there, so I took the photo into 'photoshop' and brightened it up.

I still don't see anybody, but I could read the graffiti better. LOL
i cant see anything either
Just recently discovered this site. Fascinating and beautiful. Question for Radical Ed. I used to live near Philly from '90 to '96 and I'm positive that I attended a haunted house that a local radio station held at Philly State Hospital for a couple of those years on Halloween. Do you remember that? Anyone?
Dear Addicted,
Yes there was a radio sponsered Halloween event(s) at the ole Berry, when, I do not recall.
I remember reading about this recently. Don't know if it was in the messages here, or on another Byberry site. I believe the station was the old 'Y 100'.
What building was that held in? S-10 or somewhere else?
Here is a quote from an Angelfire board: The rest can be found using this link. http://www.angelfire.c...eirdUSA/byberry.html
"About 1985 Byberry was used as a haunted house for and represented by the now defunct Eagle 106.1 radio station. I remember going to that haunted house and I had a good time. That haunted house was a good idea but it was short lived. It did not last much past the first year."
Hope this has helped
Yeah, that was in S-10. Although access to S-10 is impossible, that's where they store all of the gym equipment from the glory days of the Berry.
I do remember Eagle 106, and Electric 106 before that. (LOL)
That haunted house was really fun and very spooky. Though you couldn't really see much of the building because it was so dark in there. I wonder how the radio station got permission to use the facility.

And yes, it was Eagle 106 with John Landers and Danny Bonaduce in the morning (ah the nostalgia). But the Weird USA guy from the link is wrong about the date. It was 1995, not 1985, as I was in Massachusetts during the '80's. Ironically, not far from Northampton State Hospital... the subject of another one of Mr. Motts explorations.

Thanks for the info and for further rekindling the memories everyone!
After I signed off, I realized it wasn't '85, as they were still Z 106 at this point. '95? I thought they had switched to cool jazz by then, but then I know of no one who listened to this station past '90 or so.
it's not that S-10 is impossible to get into, it's improbable. The building isn't necessrely abandoned.
Puddleboy,

I'm pretty sure Eagle 106 changed to jazz in late 1995. My friend and I used to listen to that station at work and I clearly remember the announcement of the station change. Weird the things you remember sometimes (like that was important!) I think we went to the Haunted House in '94 though.

So I wonder if the fact that S-10 wasn't abandoned allowed the radio station to hold the Haunted House there.
Where i was actually listening the night they changed 'big bad old WWSH' to Z 106, and I managed to catch the change from Electric 106 to Eagle 106 as well, I was completely unaware of the switch to cool jazz until reading it in the newspaper.
I lived in this area a long time, was relocated to Indiana, anyone have info or knows any information on the old Eastern State School and Hosp Please email me, This hosp was located about a mile or 2 from the Byberry and was closed down a few years ago, not many have pics of ESSH, and I can't seem to get much info about why it closed down. I have a very personl interest in this.. Ty javabuzzinmama@hotmail.com.
Eastern State School and Hospital was demolished two years ago and a brand new Loews and a Wal-Mart stand on it's grounds now. The main hospital building was stripped down to it's steel skeleton and was rebuilt as a private communications college. The soda fountain, the smokestack, everything's gone.
Wal Mart? What a big surprise. They'd probably tear down the Smithsonian if they thought they could get away with it.
I got laid there in that same hallway!! 1992 my senior year at Northeast high!!
Too much information Randy.
I am willing to bet that beer was involved.
Randy stole Ed's beer?
RE -

Agreed. =8-P
psychadellic one,

Obviously more than one beer . . . . . . .
Hey Radical Ed,
by any chance do you know what building this was taken in?
because today me and my friends were in this hallway. It was our first time going and we are just trying to get a perspective on where we were.
Thanks.
Our childrens children will be visiting abandoned Wal-marts sooner or later....
IT looks like a woman in a dress looking out of a window
there is nothing there, I blew up the picture and it almost looks like some sort of light that is refecting off of the wall, no lady in a dress :-)
Here's a smart Idea why dont someone go up to the guards and give them money to be hush hush about it and let you go in the byberry hospital, at least you dont have to sneak in and increase your chances of getting cought.
Why? The guards don't really do shit anyway. They can't touch you or hold you, only chase and scare you. They're LAZY guards. You can walk right in without any problems or anything. It's the police you need to watch out for, but they usually don't go inside. Many of them are scared shitless to go in.
actually they can take you to the guard shack and arrest you that's why the sign said if cought you would be prosecuted. Because its forbidden to go in there.
No, actually security can't touch you at all. They only patrol the grounds. If they enter the buildings, they're fired on sight. Plus, the current security is rather lazy anyway.
Do they sell spray-paint at the doors of some of these places? Someone tell me, what is really the point of that?
Did anyone hear the story of one of the asylum's patients hanging himself on one of the trees on the grounds?
Twug, Amusing point.
ooo what the fuck is it just all of our eyes because i c someond standing there too!! yo its not kol no more!! fucking creepy!!
Eagle 106 changed formats on March 12, 1993. The haunted manions were in 1990 - 1992 only...
Let me clarify, 1990 - 1992 by the Eagle only. If it was in the 1980s it may have been another station. John Lander (no 's") came in 1991, as it was Rumble and Thrower before that.
tha jb on tha red box on the right is me kids
i dont think i see anyone there but its still creepy
hay radical ed, i told u we were taking the place down
Yup. Looks like somebody standing there.
Hopefully it's just an optical illusion.
It's strange for me seeing graffiti that is actually readable. Where I live, it is not haha.
wow.
i hate it how some people are so rude.
LOOKS LIKE LIGHT COMING IN THROUGH THE BOARDED UP WINDOW.
I was a Agency & Pool RN there... I see the halls as they were, as an avenue to the nurses station. It is sad, to see this. All of the employees were professional & cared about the patients.
Does look like that drippy chick from the Ring but I suspect it's just an optical illusion.
I had a aunt that worked for Byberry from 1950 to 1952.
they really should of put bettre security up, it would of looked alot nicer :(
is there a window back where I see this bright figure in the background? that would explain it if it were sun rays creating the imagine. Otherwise it might be one of victimized patients coming back for revenge...........................WATCH OUT!!!!!
i hate when people try to see or make something scary up by just looking at a picture. simply because of the history of the place. don't always suspect something scary will be caught on camera just because many buildings have a "dark past". if you carefully at this person supposedly standing far off down the hallway, you can obviously tell it's another window. either the sun was setting and the sun was hitting another direction of the building. there was some sheer curtain there, or again with the direction of the sun the shadow of another part of the building grew and it shaded that part of the window which explains the color of the light going through that window.
I totally agree with you kanon.
Interesting shot. Too bad the walls are so marred with stupid graffiti. That type of crap just drives me more insane than I already am.
iu see some one in a whit thing standing at the backgorund looks like u can see a leg and abit of a gowm
I know you guys find Byberry cool and scary but it is very real and sad for me. Looking at the pictures makes me want to cry.I use to visit my grandfather there in the 60,s. He was an alcoholic and poor during the depression. Byberry was state funded. He went in during the early 40,s. Our family would go to visit. My Dad would go in and get him and we would go to one of the big fields for a picnic. You are so lucky today that there are rehabs and medicines to help with most problems. May those poor people rest in peace.
i do believe in ghosts and i do believe that there is a figure standing way at the back of the picture
I would love to hold up a spray can and tell one of these graffiti "artists" to "Open wide!" Dumb asses.

Regarding the short bio on the main page - I can totally see people on the rooftops shooting flares at the police, etc. Only in Philly. The few times I dared to venture into the city the place looked like a bombed out war zone.
Amazing.... I remember exploring these buildings as a teenager in 1980-1986. There were always lines of parked cars along the tree lined drive every Friday and Saturday nights, teens partying and trying to scare each other. I'm amazed we didn't get seriously hurt. I have many fond memories of exploring this place... to know the truth behind it is sad...
Like you said, Motts, weird that you got so much noise even at 100 ISO. I like the effect though.
This cinderblock monstrosity is one of the ugliest damned hospitals Ive ever seen. Id hate to have been incarcerated here. On top of everything else, nothing but cinderblock walls to look ar.
anyone looking to go and see the old byberry hospital good luck it is not there no more condos were built over it ass holes they should of kept the place open and charged admisson to walk around and see it
Sad that someone fell to their death in there the day after these photos were taken. I have a high respect for what you do Motts. These are not places for amateurs to be spelunking in. Abandoned buildings can kill you DRT (Dead Right There) in a number of ways. Floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, stairwells, elevator shafts, broken glass, hot power lines, flooded basements, pissed off animals & humans can make for a very bad day. Please be careful in your adventures Motts.
