Storage Room

Storage Room

Many small fires have been started on this floor, luckily none of them have razed the building. It's only a matter of time before the place goes up in a blaze.

Arson... What's the point? I read a story in a national newspaper last year, that told of an arson attempt at a disused industrial building - resulting in the seemingly accidental blazing death of the perpetrators. I laughed.
I can only pray that happens to the firebugs over in New England here.
why do people intentionally destroy history?
People get bored, have no respect for the past, and are out looking for a quick fun time. I don't personally understand the purpose of attempting to burn down such a building of this nature, even if the history of this place isn't all rainbows and butterflies and happy days.
Basically younger people do stupid things without thinking of the consequences.Lighting fires in places you shouldn't light fires are among those stupid things.I guess thats why they always have firemen talk to elementary school classes about fire safety, unfortunately I don't think those fire safety lessons stick when they become destructive and unruly teens.
That's horrible that people are setting this building on fire! Just like Dixmont! Poor thing!
That is the thing about these people that just go back there to destroy things there is no reason for it. Someone said something about people destroying history I guess this is history but I would hate to think of this as an meaningfull history. Well because of it being closed down for the way they treated the patients I would hope that it would change the way people in these places get treated but I doubt it.
No, you are absolutely correct. We still brutalize and abuse them every gosh-darned day just for the heck of it.
gOsH LyNnE yur sooo mEaN!!!!one!! omgzzz i cAn'T bElieVe u GuYz dO thAt!!!!
ouch my brain hurts now.

Yes, sometimes patients were mistreated...there's a bad apple in every bunch. That doesn't mean that every patient was mistreated or that an overwhelming number of them were. Most were treated fine, or at least treated as best they could be with what technology was available at the time.
Orchid Lunar: Not all teens are unruly and destructive, some actually have a brain and use it.

Motts: Just found your site, these pictures are amazing! You do great work, it's good to keep the past alive even if you can only do it thru photographs. Thanks for doing this so scaredy-cats such as myself can see the inside of these great buildings!
And boy, it sure was lucky the designers jam-packed these hospitals with mountain loads of the right insurance; cause when you're thinking Snowstorm Asbestos*, you're thinking ahead, oh yeah!

*Snowstorm Asbestos Inc dose not guarantee authenticity where idiots apply.
You would be amazed at how people treat history. Working at the Myrtles I see people do some pretty horrible things that make me angry. I love the old home, even if some things that were unfair and cruel happened there. Not all of the people who lived there were like that. Just like I'm sure not all of the workers here were evil. I think most were not. You have to realize, though, that the methods of treating people years ago were very different from what we have today. Technology improves so quickly now. I think most of the people that worked here did the best with what they had. They probably did not have enough supplies at times. And I can see how it would be so hard for the small number of workers, compared to the large number of residents would pose a huge problem in being able to give "quality" time to individuals. You can't blame the people who worked there for that, though. Sure there are those in any institution that take advantage of the patients, but that is not the majority. This would not be a fun place to be a patient, but is any institution?
holy cow thats worst than my room. And my room is pretty hard to beat 4 the dirtiest room
... im 13, and by the looks of things a building like that would be waaaaay more fun not on fire. also theres this thing about the floors of buildings like that being a little dangerous when on fire. and the staircases. stuck on a high floor of a flaming and abandoned mental institute? some teenagers are stupid, but that takes it to a new level.
amazing pictures as always.

It sickens me to know we have such morons who have no respect for history. I was in some of the buildings this month and the graffetti on the walls really pissed me off. It said that crack heads and squatters are living in the tunnels, I made it to the tunnels but we didn't have the proper lighting to proceed, however we didn't run into any crack heads either but there was evidence of such. If there are vandels and junkies going there I hope the spirits scare the shit out of them and they will never return.
most of what people THINK are spirits and ghosts, are in reality the CRACKHEADS that you speak of ,Pk.
When the institution was shut down in 1986, the building was in a messy condition. Most of the kids that were put in the asylum came out but many died. I would love to do a paranormal investigation there. I'm always looking for creepy places. I like taking EVP'S and photos of the area. It gives me something to be excited about. I'm also writing a book about Pennhurst. It's like a fictitious investigation.
More fires have been started AFTER Pennhurst was clused than while it was open. Maybe they should've closed down the school and left the fire station open.
this is such an awesome picture. its lame that kids set these places on fire though. like explore take pictures idk "trip bawls" but dont light the buildings on fire. come on only thing i hope is that next time someone lights one of these buildings on fire that it goes ablaze but that person burns and dies. ha. ha
Some of my books could've burned.. D:
