this is a very sad shot...
cant you just feel what it was like? Great shot!
Meloncolic, you can almost see the lost shades waiting for anything more than what they had been denied
this wasnt life, it wasnt even an exsistance..it is hell
im just glad i wasnt there
And where are the clients?
Motts...did u have maps during all this and if so where did u find them?
to sonya... i am a nurse for some of these wonderful people. My organization assisted with deinstitutionalization. We bought houses in ne philly, 1-3 people live in a regular house with our staff there 24-7. Thank God, they have wonderful lives. We go to Norristown State Hospital frequently to review the trashed records to find out their histories. It is the saddest thing i have ever done.
triage nurse,

Must have been a lot of money going into that project.

My town got a batch of sexual deviants with no supervision whatsoever. And definitely more than 3. Ho-hum.
Motts, are these pictures of the state school as-is, or did you move things around to get this look? either way i absoloutly adore these photos and plan to eventually decorate with these prints. They are beauty in the simplist form.
Thanks! I'm pretty sure I didn't move anything around in there, as I usually don't.
in that case, we are very lucky to have an abandoned institution in such an artistic condition. im from around philly, so as soon as i get my liscense[2 years] i plan to check this place out. i find it more appealing than byberry, due to the fact that the vandalism isnt quite as appaling and image- ruining. thanks for the site! keep up the great work!
my mother, who is a nurse, drove me through pennhurst's campus today. most of it has been torn down or is in use. but the abandones buildings that are left are elegant and mysterious. thanks again for the photos and stories.
The sense of depth in this photograph is truly wonderful. The wheelchair, columns, and debris gives it a great sense of perspective. Absolutely wonderful photograph, Motts!
It's really strange in most of these shots to see all of the stuff left behind. I wonder if the state really even cared about this place when it was closed down. This picture reminds me of the ward in the movie " One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
They chained up the door at the end of the room and moved the wheelchair
i wonder how insane you'd have to be to get into these places....? eh, small thought.
i finally got to pennhurst for the first time today. im looking at my comments from 2 years ago and im amazed. it was the best trip of my life. im going back next week=]
what we once knew is now lost
Ahh....OJ-finally where you belong-jail.
