I have no idea what this could be, it looks like a refrigeration unit but for something very large, otherwise you'd have to crawl inside to get whatever it is out of there. The room is tiled, so I would guess it would have to be for either a kitchen or operating room.

After some discussion, it does appear to be a mattress sanitizer.

Could be a sterilization unit. I forget the name. Used to sterilize instruments and equipment, with high pressure steam. What's left of the hinge looks pretty stout, much heavier than one would expect for a frige. Just a thought. :)

I suppose it could be an autoclave... it's really deep though. You'd have to climb inside to get to anything in the back!

Yep, porbably a stearilazation (sp?) unit.

Definitely an autoclave they have pull out rack units and can hold about 30-40- largre trays or basains

looks like a pottery kiln,why it would be in such a place i dont know...but thats what it looks like to me without its door of course

This is a mattress sanitizer... they get stacked inside, and then they are sanitized somehow... My dad has a book about Ellis Island, and there is a picture of one of these in it. The door that would go on the front would have a large wheel in the center to seal it closed.

A mattress sanitizer does make sense, although my guess would have been an autoclave. Billy seems to know what he's talking about though, so I buy it.
