Face

Face

The bright moon rising lit the face of this building quite beautifully.

This is absolutly amazing motts
Thank you.
Are any of these beautiful homes for sale? If so how do I get the information on them? Are they in safe areas?
Thanks
No, they aren't for sale, it's a shame... they have been abated for asbestos and lie unmaintained - demolition by neglect. I don't know who currently owns the property, the buildings on the other side of the parkway have been sold for scrap, these might not have been included.
Such a shame. Those would be great restored.
Can I buy onne of these?
The abandoned building are owned by Hartland Corporation. Pilgrim "State" is still open to this day. We are now a small community located in the back of the grounds near Commack Rd. The owner of Hartland plans to build something here eventually. We will have to wait and see when. Most of the buildings have been demolished. There are still a few of the old ones that he owns which are still standing.
I grew up about 5 miles from Pilgram State 50's & 60's, and had no idea of all that went on inside. I remember dad saying that one of his doctor friends had told him that once a patient was commited to the hospital it was almost impossible to get out.
Ive been here b4 and i dont know if its just me but do you think the spirits follow you and like give you "bad luck" and "energies"...ive had too many coincedences...
Great photos-but what ashame for all these buildings there at Pilgrim and other places like it thruout the world...i always feel like these buildings have a spirit of their own and a tale to tell-and its sad to see them just go away eventually-but still =your great shots of them will be a legacy
I LIVED IN BUILDING 70 AFTER IT WAS RE DONE. I USED TO WALK UP TO THE ABANDONED BUILDINGS AND WAS AMAZED. THERES BARS ON THE WINDOWS AND LOOKED REAL SCARY.MY SON AND I SWORE WE HEARD SCREAMS AND VOICES AS WE CAME CLOSE TO THE ENTRANCE.
Great picture, wonderful lighting!! The snow and the sky seem to be the same color. I love the architecture -- the rounded windows. What a shame!!
We lived very near the complex. Over the course of time from the fifties through the sixties we called the authorities about wandering, lost and bewildered patients crossing our property. None seemed dangerously crazed but were intrigued with our horses and family pets.
I do have one other story I feel shouldn't be told...one shouldn't speak of the dead.
...I was there last night, and I really need some more information. Please email me at Lhiata@yahoo.com if you have any, it's of some personal importance... thanks.
it's so cool that the hospital is still there!
Dustyhiker please email me your story I am writing a paper for school and I have great personal interest in Pilgrim itself. If you or anyone else has any stories please email me at hopefull_destiny@yahoo.com

I pass this place everyday for work and the buildings creeped me out for a wile but I got use to it. Now it's just sad to them vacant. Great pics
My father was the chief engineer at the power house from 1937 to 1941 I believe. He got tranferred to Willowbrrok state school in 1941 to run the powerhouse there. The army took it over due to the war and after the VA took it for two years and then it reverted back to the state.. I lived at willowbrook from '41 to '52 when i joined the service and left. My father tranferred from there to Hudson River State Hospital and retired from there.
if anyone has any questions that I can answer, contact me at johnthinkqwk@aol.com
I want to hear more information please if anyone knows of any books , web sites , or anything please post it !!!!
Don't want to ask a stupid question or anything, but you say this was shot with the moon out, so I assume it was at night. Why is the sky blue or bluish rather than black, and why is it so bright it looks like daylight? Is this done in the lighting or camera settings? Thanks.
Not a stupid question at all - when a photo is taken at a long exposure (these were taken with the shutter open for a few minutes) the color of the sky starts to emerge in the visible spectrum, which is blue due to Rayleigh scattering.

"In locations with little light pollution, the moonlit night sky is also blue, for the same reasons that the sky is blue during the day (moonlight is reflected sunlight, with a slightly lower color temperature due to the brownish color of the moon). We do not perceive the moonlit sky as blue because at low light levels, human vision comes mainly from rod cells that do not produce any color perception."

Most of the colors in the above photo were not visible when I took them, simply because it was too dark to see them. If there were a bright light shining on the building, the sky would appear black as in this photo (a 10 second or so exposure): http://www.opacity.us/...158_quarter_moon.htm

In this set, the sky is also sometimes takes on orange and violet hues due to light pollution from New York City.
Mr. Motts is the MASTER!
is there asbestos in the buildings, because i know acouple of peopple who went in recently without masks and i was wondering if it is dangerous
The mansions have been leveled since these photo's were taken. There is nothing left of them except rubble. You can see it on Google Earth.
