Hoist

Hoist

The large hoist at the front of the hall. The sign reads,

Alfred Box & Co Builders
Phila PA 50 Tons
.

The company has since merged into the The Shaw-Box Crane and Hoist Company in 1928, and still exists today.

Thanks for the info on the company. Industrial history has always fascinated me -- and your knowledge is much appreciated. Judging by the size of the building, I guess a 50-ton tracked crane would have been necessary for maintenance and repair of the generators and turbines.
motts is that where the stained glass is above there ?
The arch is the backside of this facade: http://www.opacity.us/image1578_decor.htm
I climbed on that..mad fun lol
Great machines never die.
This facilitated maintenance of the original dynamo's which were originally at the plant, then later the steam turbines. I thought it was a 75 tonner, but the info u's provided show 50 tons. Cool stuff.
