I can see a line of patients just so unhappy walking up these stairs
when i look at this pic i get chills
Such a sterile and sad picture. The concrete walls bordering the empty dark stairs--intense!
nebody know if the basement is still flodded n if the underground passages r blocked?
The only hallway that's flooded is the one that goes past the "C"s and goes under Southampton Road. It been flooded forever. It goes right smack into a cement wall construction workers put up years ago.
there are many tunnels, some go from old section to the new section of byberry. REALREZ@AOL.COM
Tunnels? Get out....really? ;-)
Did they do the same thing to the tunnel leading to the E buildings as they did to the tunnel underneath southampton Rd.?
Looking at my friend Buck's pilfered Byberry blueprints, I discovered that there were never any tunnels going from the main complex to the E's. There was an 8-inch diameter steam pipe that went under the Roosevelt Blvd, but that was it.
Everyone's aware you can ACCESS the blue prints to almost any state building, right? I looked at some from Danvers, although I had to go all the way to Boston since that was where the archutiect was from, I still got them. I bet if you figure out who constructed any of these buildings you can get the layouts and such. Althogh I doubt they'll help much because they wouldn't have the additions on them.
There are so many maps on-line, who needs blueprints? Here's a link to some of them!

Would anyone be surprised if someone tried to blow a hole through the wall in the flooded steam tunnels unterneath Southampton Rd. in order to gain access to S-10?
Why yes, that type of stupidity would be VERY surprising. The tunnel would cave in before you'd get through the three feet of concrete they poured.
That's what I thought.
Remember, the tunnels under the "C" and "S" buildings are about 90 years old.
Three feet seems a bit excessive.
A friend of mine waded through neck-deep scumwater and took a photo holding the camera above his head the entire journey. The wall is impenetrable.
Wow
If this tunnel has been flooded forever there must be a source. There's about 2 inches of water in the catacombs between w-6 and the traffic tunnel.
i started down that area of tunnels and got as far as up to my knees in freezing cold water at which point, i decided to turn around.
I wonder if anyone had thought of draining the tunnels yet.
Does anyone know the purpose of the tunnels? Was it for the winter months so no one would have to go outside in the cold? Are all the tunnels underwater? I don't believe I have seen any pics of the tunnels.
I don't think the tunnels had water in them then. Over the course of time, they have begun to leak. As for the purpose of the tunnels, I believe it was a way to transport the patients from building to building without exposing them to the outside elements.
That sounds right, the junior high i went to had a tunnel connecting two buildings just for that reason,( not for transporting patients of course ) from the outside you couldn't tell there was a tunnel, it looked like two seperate buildings seperated by a lawn.
The tunnels that are flooded are STEAM TUNNELS. They were used to transport heat to every building. The other tunnels are patient walkways. The tunnels connected every building EXCEPT the E buildings.

Motts needs to take another trip to Byberry.
I went here yesterday and there is absolutely NO water underneath Southampton Rd.! the only place there is water is in the steam tunnel leading to N-10.
Andrew, maybe not this week, but if you email me, I'll send you pics from my friend's journey to the cement wall. This is past the shopping cart on your way to the C's. The water is over five feet deep. You say you made it all the way to the wall, and no water? I'll find out when I go on Tuesday.
After the rain, everything gets all wet.
Pardon the randomness of that prior statement.
Slippery when wet, that's a good thing, ~Me.......
Who's blushing? ~Me is blushing.

I actually took a picture of the wall in the steam tunnel. I was very suprised to see nothing in it.
I made it there the other day and found the was no water in the tunnel!! So I finally got to see the wall at the end of the tunnenl! - No light, just the wall :-)
How far did the water come up to? The shopping cart?

I'm suprised to find that there is no hole in the other boiler room wall.
The water used to come up to the two giant slanted pipes right past the cart. It started out from not-even-an-inch all the way up to five-plus feet.
If that hole from the first boiler room up into the haunted hallway wasn't there, there'd be no access to the "C" buildings from the inside. It was there in the early 90's when I first went that way.
Actually, there would. the "hobbit tunnels" intersect with the main tunnel and a few of the openings into buildings weren't bricked off. So once you got into one building, you could get into the haunted hallway and into every other building.
Oh, and how far did this tunnel actually go?
That tunnel went under Southampton Road and ended in one of the now-demolished maintenance garages. It branched off to the now-demolished laundry buildings and over to where Self-Help and S-10 are.
Oh yeah Andrew, I forgot about the entrances to the hobbit-tunnels that are located in the steam tunnels. I climbed into those from the one with the small steel ladder and spent an hour or two in them with Red Dragon back in '03.
What about the south group, such as S-1, S-2, and S-3? (the tunnels past the power plant)
what is the most infamous or worthwhile building or hall that if ur a first timer ud say is a must see? and whats so notorious about the haunted hall, what happened there???????????
Im sorry Alex... but thats top secret information.
She's right. If we told you we'd just have to shoot you afterwards, and we don't need that sort of thing hanging over our heads. :-(
I'M TELLING YOU, the more I read the sicker you people get. this is really sad that you only see the dark side to things and not the beauty of and learning and showing children how to act in our socity as decent human beings

fascination with the past and maybe learning something from it - sick? hmmm. from what i've read byberry has been empty and abandoned for a very long time. vandalism is nothing new, and i'm not condoning it at all. but curiosity and the desire to explore? that's just human nature and you'll never change it. if people never think about the past they are doomed to never think about things beyond their current frame of reference, and to me that's the sad thing. and, um, since a mother who cares has commented a fair bit, i suspect they are pretty curious themselves. armchair UE doesn't make you superior, you know.

right. i'll shut up now.
u cant get 2 all the tunnals any more the y are demoing them 4 new houses n condos some kid on a job site i m on said he filled alot of them in with dirt
those stairs r much more worn down now
I have never expierenced the pleasure of visiting Byberry, but I do believe it would be very interesting. The subject of underground tunnels in this state hospital is quite intriguing. However, does anyone have proof of this?
yes they were real, we would travel through them with torches.
haunted hay i wanna know more
soz i like my ghosties

all this pics got me thingking about the abuse that the docs and nures and all gave to there patients soo sad
thats why alot of the state hospitals was closed down :)
To the mother that cares:
if you cared so much you wouldn't be sitting on your butt looking at pics you'd be trying to REALLY helping not telling us how much you want to do DO IT!!!!!!
grr.....
Does anybody see the face in th window!!???
