what a mess :(
Yeah.. too bad the whole place is trashed!
Apparently, all the doors to the drawers of these things (or whatever the hell they're called) were all taken off because a girl who was with her friends got stuck in there somehow and died instantly ... anyone know anything about that??
And you know this how?
My buddy Steve worked with the state crew to empty Byberry when it closed. There's a law in Philadelphia that states you must remove any/all refridgerator/freezer doors before disposal. I believe they were removed before it officially closed down.
Interesting... there aren't any handles on the inside of a morgue door, although I doubt anyone actually got locked in a freezer.

So the moral is, if you're in an abandoned morgue, alone, and decide to somehow push the tray inside with you laying in it, leave at least one door open.
Ahem .. Amanda .. I said that "apparently" this happened ... technically, I wasn't stating that it was a FACT .. just a cool story .. : )
ugh How pushy!!!... :-)
I'm sure the freezer door law was passed for kids, not adults, however I can think of someone I'd lock in a morgue container if I had the chance.
Yeah I asked someone about that, the law was passed a while back, when refrigerators latched closed (now they use a weak magnet to seal the doors).

A little research revealed that refrigerator doors manufactured prior to 1958 had mechanical latches which were impossible to open from the inside. Kids would wind up playing in discarded refrigerators and wind up locking themselves in; the sealed door prevented and screams from being heard, and they would eventually suffocate. The New York Times published a figure of 115 children dying this way in over a decade long period before 1955.

Congress passed the Refrigerator Safety Act in 1956, and attempts to smash the latches off the remaining unused refrigerators has since minimized these incidents.

But, this law only applies to household refrigerators, not commercial or morgue freezers.
I remeber there being doors around 94'-95'
These remind me of concentration camp crematoria. There's a famous picture of Maijdanek that looks very much like this, except there are half-burned corpses inside the chambers.
Yes, contemplating the cadaverous storage space seen here has always been a past-time at the Berry.
hey, Ed, u go there a lot?
Let's just say I've been there once or twice...
;-)
i was there last night... there's so much to take in, in one night, this place is more than just one trip... you have to go here multiple times to be able to see everything, either that or stay for 10 hours. so which building is the morgue in? one of the taller bulildings? and in a basement? or... what, i know it's hard to explain since theres over 10 buildings.
this place is a rush
Too bad the "artwork" cheapens the shot. Motts, why are some places more trashed by this crap than others, do you know? Does it have to do with accessibility? And it seems that Byberry is exceptionally damaged.
It's is a shame that all the abandoned places are full of graffitti. I like the places that even though have been closed for decades still have dishes sitting in the sink beds still made ect like it was just yesterday they left, you get a better feel of what life was like for them.
I've been there. I was so scared, but then again I was high
It's nothing to be afraid of. There's no longer any bodies in there, that could reach out and grab you...if there ever was.
I know there's nothing to be afraid of, but I was high and my friend was scarin me
chea true story the reason the doors arnt on there is because a girl was playing hid and seek in philly (not byberry) and there was a old refrig on the side of the street. she hid in it but the door looked he hind her and she culdnt get out and she died. so its the law to remove all refrig doors when they are being trashed
xing crew as in washingtons crossing iv heard of you guys
the ppl who ran this place, were they bad ppl or what?
I am not saying they were bad or good i will let you form your own opinion at Goddog's Byberry Site http://theduke81.tripod.com it is one of the best byberry sites on the web
died nov 2001
Most of the time you don't see this. They seal off the fridge with cement because dead humans are considered toxic waste and a morgue fridge is a bio harzard area.
I've seen at least 20-30 abandoned morgues, and have never seen a sealed off the refrigeration unit. The bodies aren't left inside when a hospital closes.
no i beg to differ i have seen dead tutrels
Sorry - what was that? Dead turtles?
Over here in England, there have not been latches on freezer/refridgerators for years. I have heard of people being accidentally suffocated in them. On commercial"walk in" freezers, there is a push bar on the inside which lets you out should you accidentally become trapped inside.
All the freezer door thingos were taken from the hospital near here not because of things like getting locked in a freezer but because the recycle value on those are great. All the copper piping in the old hospital here was taken too along with a few toilets and stuff what was left was vandalised and thrown from the third story window. A different hospital a bit further from where i am which was used to house the insane has been turned into a Hotel/Motel. I want to stay there but for personal reasons cant bring myself to do it.
Oh and Webby is right, Humans are classified along with the morgues as a bio hazard area because of diseases such as MRSA (i think it called that) And golden staff, and for you guys who dont know what golden staff is then ill let you know that dont go in there with any open wounds.. golden staff is a flesh eating disease found in most hospitals.. even ones still running
not true about there being doors in 94-95. i was there in 94 and have pics of the morgue if anyone wants to see them. no doors then. big myth.
My bud Pazuzu has photos to prove it man.
All hail Pazuzu! Demon of wind and son of Hanbi...!

Yeah. That was corny. Couldn't help myself. ;)
And to make it clear... I'm not a satanist ^^
Just interested in learning of "demons" and whatnot... Anyway.. So I don't get in trouble for talking of useless things... Amazing shot, Mr. Motts. And contrary to what others may think, I believe the graffitti kinda makes the picture look better... In an artsy, strange type of way. o-O
Dead Turtles? Were they at least dancing?
the morgue is taged something different every time that I go there
wow i been in here and this place is definately haunted. this is the scariest place to ever be im telling you. never go in here because its believed to be cursed and ever since i been in there my whole life changed KEEP OUT!!!
While going through the various site comments, I have been exposed to so many new words in the English language -- tutrels, derbies, etc. -- can't find them in Webster, though!!
Lmao. Such a smartass-ish reply...

I love it Janice!
Oh.. And John Doe..

If you'd heard it was "cursed", why did you go there in the first place? ;)
MSC -- hey, you caught the sailor mistake, you know "seaman"!!!
shittt that scary as a mother fucker wat the fuck did they burn them or wat?
[stunned silence]
*LMFAO* ... Yet another person oblivious to the world around them.
I'm crying here!! Big globs of tears streaming down my face while I'm also trying to file something in Court.
yo i live like 2 minutes from this place but anyways, i have heard many stories from people who have been here and they said they "heard things" is it true ??
BTW- maddd props to the photographer.
you are NOT going to die "instantly" being locked in a mourge box,and the door are missing because they were stainless steel, and have scrap value
byberry demo begins tomorrow,,,first with asbestos abatement.
in the meantime,,,trespassers will be pummelled.
I thibk that all places that are left like that are waiting time bombs for trouble, you just dont know who or what is waiting for you in there, so if you go in your taking chances any way. stay out!!!!!!!
Seen alot of the morgue shots throughout this site, but I find this one really creepy.
Looks like they're waiting to be fed.
Thank you, Lynne; from your 2 posts. I can't understand half their mis-spelled and fulgar language, either.
I LOVE IT!!!!
i visit byberry alot, its close to my house, but recently, theres been alota activity and alota police nd shit...as well as people doing construction or something...idk wut it is, theres vans and shit, and i think i saw construction equipment...not sure tho...
haha i lvoe byberry. last time i was in the we were in the c buildings and we seen the patrol car and almost got caught. we had to run to the roof. and u know that creek, we ran into it going back to wawa running from the cops. haha byberry scared the shit outta me. tehres mad cops now. and officer mcgrath. i hear so much about him yet i still didnt have to deal withj him.
that girl was killed in there and they say that she was sick and that her friend was not real. She had gotton lost and went inside the room where they say that a women talks people into doing strange things. It's all over the world the storys of a women inside of bulidings waitting for people to come in.
I wish they die
Some of you are incredibly obnoxious. Nobody has died there since it was originally opened. Nobody was locked in anything, there are no little girls, nothing is haunted.

It's an old, sad place full of bad memories. That's it.
Well put Dustin! People have no respect for human suffering or photography.
what the hell is with kids and grafetti? Did they not learn not to write on the walls when they were tots?
I guess no one told Michaelangelo or Rivera not to write on the walls either.
I think a developer bought the land and they are half way done tearing the buildings down brick by brick!
Half way?... Not even close. Only ONE building remains now and it will be gone before Christmas.
Every night, and every morn' some to misery are born.Every morn' and evry night some are born to sweet delight, some are born to sweet delight, some are born to endless night
What is WITH people and graffiti?

It's so ugly and the people who leave it all over everything are vandals. They show how ignorant they really are.
"I guess no one told Michaelangelo or Rivera not to write on the walls either."

Graffiti isn't art! Get real!
awesome pictures. One must tell me if there is anything left of the places since they've started tearing it down?
this place looks like CRAP!!!!!
Looks can be VERY deceiving...
They sprayed graffiti inside this thing ???

How sick !

Signed: An American Soldier stationed in Germany.
Looks like somthin' out of a horror film!
talk about respect to the dead...assholes
no
I'm willing to bet that these grafiti artists are
high school kids. At any rate these buildings are not for throwing a party... I have always been interested in old buildings
Such a shame that they're tearing it down. .-.
I'd have loved to go in it.
Is the morgue in W3?
I remember my folks taling aobut htis place when I was a kid. I have recently started learning about Byberry and the horrors that went on inside it's walls. A really bad period of American history but one that should never be forgotten. To everyone, please have respect for those who died there.
i found a video from 1994 on youtube were you can see all the dores still intact http://www.youtube.com...&feature=related only one was missing but this place was really trashed back then but yea im guessing vandles ripped them off some how
I was there I'm buck
I would have wanted the morgue trays for work benches etc.
laid on em and its scary no matter how big ur balls are
there not scary when there vandlised theres not even any dores of them i could lay in there they looekd alot larger then the ones at kppc
I agree with Scott it isn't scary.
Motts,Have you ever thought about comming down to Kentucky and taking pictures like this of Waverly?
Yes, I hope to visit Kentucky very soon, although I am not sure how far the sanatorium has been renovated / cleaned up...
Do the vandals actually think peole are gonna read all their grafitti statements?
Oh... A set of pics from Waverly Hills would be so wonderful to see here! I have the movie Death Tunnel that was recorded there and I really love the surroundings seen in the movie. Both inside and outside of the building.

So it'd really be a pleasure so see some more stuff from there!
This makes me incredibly upset.
How could someone deliberately destroy a place with such a colorful history.
People don't understand what they are doing.
I wonder if they know how many people died in these places and how they are disrespecting them by writing vulgar things on the walls and destroying there home.
your talking about philadelphia here! there is not one square inch of abandoned building thats not graffitied! people have no respect anymore. especially in philly
yes i agree with angel.. and another thing is this place is haunted beyond belief.. and i couldnt imagine what some of the people went thru because they did not understand the mental health.. and the trephening i heard about man.. who would wanna drill a hole in someones head to release the demons
*shutter*
just a shame that people had to ruin such history. and it happens in a lot of places not just phily..
but its sad they let a place like this go to waste.. because it could have helped some people see how it was like to be in some state hospitals and this one was shut down because of lack of money.. such a shame
I think it's time to close the door on Byberry,
People have been talking about this for many years, it's a sad story.
I have a pic of my friend Jerzy on that thing. I miss it, we had good times at the berry.
You know, I wanna be a criminologist, (study of criminals and criminaly insane), it would be nice to see the arrangements that these people lived in. Plus I love scary places.
It's very sad that we're not going to be able to see this historical buildings anymore... plus it was such a great place to have a creepy time
Quit weeping about the grafitti. To high school kids it's just a place rumoured to be haunted; a place you can leave your name for other classmates to read so they know you had the guts to actually do it. To us elders it's a place of loss with a colourful history. But that's life: it doesn't matter how important you or the place is, it'll still be tagged, demolished and forgotten. Just like the rest of us.
WHAT A SHAME. WORKED THERE FOR YEARS AND IT WAS A GOOD FACILITY. AGAIN, WHAT A SHAME. IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS I LEFT PENNSYLVANIA!
The building should be cleaned up a bit and taken care of. Maybe it could even be open to the public at some point. Not so much as a tourist location, but moreso to educate people of the history behind BMH. It's absolutely breath-taking to be there and to walk the same halls that so many others have before you, whether that be a teenager the week before, a faculty member in 1970, or an "inmate" from 1940.

However, this photo depicts something much more sad than simply a morgue--the graffiti itself is horrible. Sure, it's cool to leave your mark, but is it really necessary to vandalize something with so much history? Honestly, it's just so pointless to me.
My dad says he was born there :D
DAM I WOULD LIKE TO GO EXPLORE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
