Nursing School Library (Before And After)

Nursing School Library (Before And After)

The top photograph shows the library for Pilgrim State Hospital's nursing school in the 1950's, the bottom photo was taken in 2004. Remnants of the curtains over the windows lay in a wet heap just outside the door.

The top photo is from Leo Polaski's book, "The Farm Colonies" (2003).

wow, great stuff. You wouldn't Imagine that anything would be left of 50 year old curtains.

Great before and after shots.
Sorry to piggy back my posts. I wonder Id any of these nurse students ever wound up working at Edgewood.
I wouldn't doubt it... Edgewood was practically across the street.

These graduates probably worked at hospitals all over New York; I'd imagine Pilgrim State's nursing school was top notch, being that this was the largest psychiatric institution in the US.
Its kinda wierd to see these people so long ago in a room that was alive and now abandoned and left to devour itself. just take a minutes to look at the nurses and then let your eyes wander over to the empty roting room. It give a sort of wierd feeling.
It takes years for a place to decompose and turn to an empyt shell, but it only takes a second to reflect on the way it used to be with this before and after shot.
Another very well done shot. A mood well set with the before and after shots. Thank you Motts.
Great wood, it held up well compared to the rest of the room.
Very nice picture,
It's the same old sun that warms the room today as fifty years ago!

I wonder if any of those nurses are still alive. The one standing foremost has an elderly posture, but a few of the seated ones look like they may have been rather youthful.
Wow that is something. One of my friends grandmothers was the chief nurse on one of the wards at Pilgrim back in the 30's and she also attended the nursing school. I have also met several formar graduates of the nursing school, and yes, doc's and nurses were reguarly traded over to Edgewood or else where, and all of those nurses went on to work in the State Hospitals across the state. In fact most of Edgewoods staff was housed at Pilgrim and there are still graduates of the nursing school still alive today in that it was operational well into the late 70s.
yo i was just their the the other night with a group of people and we walked inside and that was the room me and a couple of tother people walked in... its scary we went their with flash lights and we heard a whole bunch of stuff it was freaky.. but my friend and his gilrfreind made out near what it looked like the x-ray room creepy stuff..
i found myslef in this room..and i was lookin for books..but i couldnt find any..there was a "deceased" sign on the top of the bookshelf and i climed up and stole it..was i wrong?
since these buildings have ghosts now, all you have to do to see the ghosts is to look at the before picture and there they are.
I would love to have that wall of bookshelves!
these pictures of before and after are perfect..i wonder how you got them in proportion did u have the old pic and took the new one there like that?
I spent many hours in that library. It holds many memories. I would love it, if you wold publish a book with there pictures. My children don't believe that such a place really existed. I remember the fun we had as students living on the grounds, the sadness as one of our patients died and the comraderie one feels when they say " I'm a Pilgrim grad". thanks for this site.
This picture makes me want to cry, but i am waxing philosophical.....sorry.
It still holds a faint whisper of living activity. Thanks to your work, I look at everything in a different light... a light that appears fifty to a hundred years from now.
I attended Pilgrim State Nursing School in the early 70's and I swear this picture is of several nurses in 1970's.....it really captures the feeling...
I love how you can see where the books once were on the shelves. Odd, creepy, yet beautiful.
I love how you can still see where the clock was on the wall....great stuff
i loooooove befor-and-after-photos at all.
Good past/present flick. I mean it was all freaky and creepy and like I made out my chick in the bookshelf, jeez, it was all groovy. Mott, you definately need a more sofhisticated clientel.
Really amazing pictures. My grandmother worked in CISH for over 30 yrs starting in the early 50's. I find this site facinating
Thanks Heather, I plan to put up some Central Islip State Hospital photos at some point in the future as well.
Heather,

I wish you could share some of her stories with us.
I was a student nurse from Plattsburgh, Ny in 1956 and attended classes in this l
library. Hard to believe, I recognized the nursing caps from my schoo!!
This is my class... graduated in 1972..I can name these peeps... they changed the uniforms soon after that, but I can understand why someone thought it was a class from the 50's. There are plenty of these classmates alive still. we are in our mid-50's and almost no one stayed in the state hospital system.. we all moved away... having had enough of it then, but time has made these years more precious to us... and value the education we got there.. We knew we were getting a good education WHEN we were there... It was awesome. I live in Texas now, moved from Baldwin NY in 1982... still a good nurse...nursing administrator now. They taught us integrity in nursing you don't see at all now.
WOW!

It's a pleasure to have you here visiting.
Thank you so much for coming by.

We would like to hear more about the hospital and your experiences there. If you would be so inclined to share it with us.
The top photo creeped me out for a few seconds. But i think it's sad how lonely it is now and how at one time it used to be full of life.
You did it again Motts, amazing after shot
H.Mek- would love to hear from you.....I am still in Virginia......
WOW! I love the before & afters.
It would be cool for you to do this more often if you happen to find a before picture, because I always find myself wondering what the places were actually like while they were still up & running.
imagine the stories that came out of that room. So much history
The pic from the 70's, and those students were about 18-21 years old, so that makes them in their late 40's-50's. Of course Many are alive!
Great before and after shots, very interesting. I love the wood in that bookshelf, it's very beautiful looking and it must have been a pleasant room to study in "back in the day".
Really interesting seeing the before and after pics. LOVE the bookcases!
Even looks like it has one of those ladders that slide along the length of it, so you can reach any book you want with ease.
Truly facinating. I'd love to hear the stories, as well as see more before and after shots. This really is an excellent site.
I went to Nursing School at the state hospital
motts this is some great stuff
It's amazing and unbelieveable that people once stood where this rotting whole in the wall lays.
Love the bookcase.
I was in the last class to graduate from Pilgrim's School of Nursing in 1977. I spent many hours in this library. It could be the woman in the foreground is famed Nursing instructor Helen "Smokey" Mosig.

For 3 years I lived on the grounds in bldg 72 on the Nurses

This site is great, yet sad. I remember Pilgrim as a thriving facility. My sisiter ran the Operating room in 23. If any one has any pix I'd lve to see them.

I'll dig for my pix of Pilgrim from the 70's and offer them up when I gind them.

Good job here Mott!

I'd like to recycle those bookshelves into my house.
time really had some fun with this room
how were you able to go in and take pix.. did you sneak or given permission? curious
Mott's has a teleporter. Not much is known about it, but here's a picture:

You've done it again! A before and after. This is great!
Brings back interesting memories from nursing school many many years ago (Hi Danny long time since we were in this room - we were young men just getting ready to start our careers - now I'm retiring! Unbelievable how fast this time went by - Our school closed 31 years ago!)
Love the photos!
I was a SUNY, Plattsburgh student nurse and spent three months at Pilgrim State in 1962 for my psychiatric rotation.Lived in building 69. Anyone remember Arthur Pointka a student nurse at Pilgrim State in the 60s - an old high school classmate of mine.
i love you mom. this was a scary place.we are ok. i will find bernadette. i love you.
Sammy u lucky bastard, but I went there a couple months ago, got a steam thingy
The Before and After photos are truly amazing.
I love these before and after shots you have.
It's just like taking a step back into the past.

I can't get enough.
How I'd love to be there myself.
I remember my mother having to wear those those nursing caps and uniforms. No more though.
I am a graduate from the class of 1974. I have fond memories of being a nursing student at Pilgrim. I lived in Building 71. Those were good days
I remember many hours spent in that room! I was in the graduating class of 1973. We lived in "Home 69", ...the co-ed dorm! I remember parking in the circle, walking thru the grounds, working on the wards, etc. We were the first class to wear the new uniforms...how we hated them! Got a great education.
Love the pictures. So many memories. I graduated in 1976 and lived in Home 69. Driving through there now is so sad. Pilgrim nurses are the best nurses
Great before and after shots! I love those
no one should ever be put away like that or treated like dogs because they are sick think god that hospitale gone ; there alot of people out there that are not well and my god keep them safe away from dr. who want to hurt them for no reason like electro shock and tieing them down like they are animals .
Does any one know Shary Harmon she went to Nursing School at Pilgrim
I graduated in 1970 but spent most of my years in the class of 69. I was what they called a "Super Senior" and have my 40 year old son,Douglas, to prove it.
Bld 25 training with Patti Laura ed Lenski
I graduated in 1966. We were the first class to live in 69 as a co-ed dorm. Pilgrim turned some of the best nurses that I have ever met in 40 plus years. It was a great school and believe in the" art and science of nursing"!
It makes me sad to see what it looks like now...It is easy to believe that many ghosts walk those grounds....
I love the before & after. It really gives an idea of what it is and what it was.

And I'm glad to see so many people who got so much use out of this room have found their way here. Reading some of your recollections gives so true humanity to this derelict structure. Thank you
I thought I recognized one of the students in that picture from my graduating class. I graduated from Pilgrim in 1977. We were the last class to graduate from Pilgrim. It seems like only yesterday. Hard to believe I graduated over 30 yeras ago!
