Ward 5

The central ward room, the hallways split off into the different wings, straight ahead is the ward 5 kitchen. The ceiling has been removed, leaving a skeletal framework of wires.

I thought it was a bed of some kind
I think the pics are amazing. Did you have to get permission to go in there, or you just went in? I am really into photography and find the shots amazing. Sceamerbeffers@aol.com
The ceiling looks like an umbrella with the cloth missing.
do u see what i see??? i see 2 orbs, one just in the lower right corner of the doorway, the other on the left of the doorway at about the lower half of the door. im not that sure if the lower one is an orb or something else, but im pretty sure the upper one is an orb which is moving to the left. u can see its moving tail.
after some paranormal-researches i'm pretty sure now this is a real ghost pic of an orb (that one at the left side of the doorway) with its tail, what is not unusual for orbs. the lower one which i ment to be an orb too might just be some light effect and/or stuff. but the one on the left side in about some feet above the floor is one for 95% sure. : )))
Ummm... What? Where exactly are you seeing these? I don't see anything out of the ordinary for an abandoned building... Do you mean inside the doorway, or outside it?
BTW, who do you research for? I've been working w/ IGHS since 97... Ah the glory days, back before it was "cool", and when we used science to back our theories... I miss those days. :(
I thought he was talking about the white plastic bags.
Yeah, it looks like nothing more than debris to me...
i mean that thingy at the left inside the doorway which is flaoting about 3 feet above the floor. its tail shows that its moving from the right to the left side or approaching from inside the room through the left side of the doorway. ive seen many orb-pics by now and this is one orb. there will never be an 100% guarantee for the existence of orbs, but at least this is what people call "orb". and though watching a photograph without watching the scene itself cant be science backup at all. so im just for 95% sure its one and not for 100%. ; )

mr. motts what do u think? was there something resting in right this spot (i described above) which could make it look like this and would explain it all?

@jo:
no plastic bag in the world would float 3 feet above the floor with an light aura at its edge. ;D
I still don't see it.
I see what you're seeing, but I still think it's a bag. It's not floating, it's resting on the floor beyond the doorway. If it is an orb though, whoa! You don't usually see them that big!

Jo: Ok, right inside the doorway, it looks like the door collapsed inward? Go to the top left corner of that rectangle, and it is just touching it there...
What is touching what?
WHERE?!?
Oh forget it!
I hate to burst your bubble, but that's a plastic bag.
look:

1. look the door in the middle of the pic

2. watch the left door frame

3. in the height of about 3 feet above the floor...

4. ...in the right side of the left door frame...

5. ...is a chubby apparition with bright border/edge/aura/whatever ...

6. ...and a tail which can be seen at its right side

if you cant see it at all it might be cause ur no sonday kid like me. we sunday kids are said to have extraordinary sense for paranormal stuff. i can sense ghosts since i was a child. where freakin i can tell...
"All houses in which men have lived and died are haunted houses: through the open doors the harmless phantoms on their errands glide with feet that make no sounds upon the floors."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
It's Pink!

and Ugleeeeeeeeee!
maybe its a big fat orb of a big fat ghost. lol

im quite sure its not a plastic bag cause of the bright edge of this appiration.

here a link with beautiful orbs. even big ones. : )

Here's a bunch more:

Then again, here is a list of info on telling the difference between a real orb and a fake one:
http://www.ghostweb.com/#Educational
See especially "Common Film Problems", "Examples of Lens Flare", and "Dust and Orbs"

If you blow the picture up (between 200 and 400 percent) you can tell for certain it isn't an orb. It looks almost like a large bowl or a sink. There even appears to be a drain in it... It could also be the cover from a light fixture (ok, soap dispenser).

I don't think we'll know for sure what this is, so I wouldn't use it as a "proof" for ghosts existing. I'd want a better picture that left no doubt that it was another object...
if it would be a bowl or a sink its bright edge wouldnt surround it over all. and what bout the tail? i would say its some kind of motion tail. it cant be dust cuz its not as steady as a dust orb. just as u say, from just watching one photo we wont get any proof of anything at all. just beeing spooky is fun. =)

and im still waiting for mr. motts opinion cuz i'm very curious now. =)

huhu mr. motts!!! :P
I know you wanted Motts, but you got me. (LOL)

I see the same Witchyified image in there. Actually it looks like a huge bat.
It is most likeley something like a sink or basin. If the edge rounded out like that of a bell, but more extreme it would have a bright edge on it.
I'm verry convinced it is a bowl like object. The shadows on the inside are just right.
Toilet to my guess, and the light spot could be anyting, light falling from the roof to reflections of the bowl like object.
Looks like the underside of a toilet bowl.
That's our Motts. 8`-)
Sketch --> "Yeah, it looks like nothing more than debris to me..."

Or maybe . . . . . . . derbies? ;-)
Ah -squeezes Lynne- I got something right!!! my post above Master Motts's post. -giggles-
Why, yes indeed you did, young lady! 6 points for you! :-)
I was trying to be a smartass and it worked! This deserves celebration of Motts getting his butt out to exploring for more pictures for us to celebrate on.
Wait a minute...I'm the resident smart ass! I think there's an orb there, but it's inside the garbage bag. =)
Are we all looking at the same thing?
Prolly not, Backy.
maybe its a floating bowl within a plastic bag, thrown by a friend of motts who was standing inside the room. lol. >8-q
why would they remove the ceiling and leave the other crap behind? makes no sense
Might have been part of an asbestos abatement process.
Yes, this building has been abated, and ceiling tiles are often ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials)
i've just read this thread - may i say how much i enjoyed the phrase "chubby apparition"...ooh! look everyone! it's the ghost of mickey rooney!
I think the photography is amazing, I always wished to go and explore, and ghost hunt, and be scared shitless.....
I recently watched an episode of "Law and Order" that looked like parts of it were filmed in abandoned sections of a mental hospital. The worst conditions were in a ward that had been closed, called "Ward 5" in the show, with a small "Ward 5" sign above the door, like the one in this picture. I think the episode was called "Land of the Free" from season 17. It was about the conditions in veterans' hospitals where wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are treated. I couldn't find any details about the filming of the location shots on the show's website. Does anyone know where it was filmed?
I'm not sure which building this was shot at. In buildings 22 and 24 there were two wards per floor in each building and there were three floors. I would imagine that this would one of those wards. The central room of each ward was called the "ROTUNDA" and had platered domed ceilings. The Nursing Office, Dining Room, Ward Main Entrance (Locked) Door, the Bathroom/Shower/Laundry Room, the Dayroom and the Hallway to the Patient's Dormitory Area all ran off of this central "ROTUNDA" The Dormitroy Area contained two (2) rooms with simple metal frame beds, upon whidh were institutional matteresses. The beds were packed pretty tightly toghether. Most wards had about 35 patients (There were no bunkbeds only singles on the floor for safety). The photographs of the caged solariaums at the end of each floor are of these buildings. The caged solariums were smoking areas until OMH banned smoiking indoors in all of their buildings. The Dayrooms usually contained a bookshelf or two, a pool table, a ping pong table and a bunch of padded charrs with a few loveseats here and there. There were no fullsize sofas to prevent patients from sleeping all day long on the couches. Many of the patients were so sedated they could barely keep their eyes open, but they were not allowed to lay down during the day as the door to the dorm area was locked and the MHTA staff admonished them frequently for lying in "fetal positions" on the tiny loveseats. Sometimes there was a lively game of Spades, the Television was on constantly. Some of the patients with Honor Cards would take collections and orders from the other folks without privileges and make COFFEE and CIGARETTE RUNS to the Commissary on the other side of the campus. The Locked Door to the Unit(s) was opened with a huge skeleton type Key which fit all of the units in the building. I had a key in the 80;s and again later when I was Director of Recipient Affairs during the 90's. I had intended to report it "LOST" so I could keep it as a souvenir, but t urned it in to Facilities/Engineering over by the Power Plant when I left the job in 1996.
