There were two massive vents of some sort. They have been cut open by welding torches.

People go in there and take the scrap metal all the time. I think they like get permission from OMH and go in and take the scrap metal.
Actually more likely exhaust fans used to push the smoke out of the boiler / stack.
these are FD (forced draft fans) they force the primary air threw the boiler along with the products of combustion threw the stack breaching and up and out the stack
I worked at kings park power plant. these are either over draft or under draft blowers. they blew air through the fire grate or fire bed. and helped get that white hot flame .dont forget originaly they burned coal like a blacksmiths fire.
in the attic of the leukemia hospital.check out the underground tunnels.they will take you under the whole pshostpital complex.you may even come up inside the criminal insane hospital jail. good luck!
