thats hot
Puuuuuurdy
HAS ANYBODY CLIMBED IN UP THERE AND TAKEN A PICTURE THROUGH THOSE VENTS.
Dude, easy on the caps, there's enough people around as is mindlessly keeping the caps lock on :^P

I would imagine the roof isn't quite stable enough and climbin' up there would be way too risky and might not even be worth it (at best there might be bird nests inside :^P)
It breaks my heart that this will be torn down to make apartments. If the people this space is being designed for knew its history, would they still want to live there?
I could not help to comment on this one pic. I enjoy spires and old ruins. I have read that a weather vane as on top of this spire is actually a lightning rod! This is so awesome! And to this individual who commented on the CAPS...my niece has bad eyesight, and many times she uses CAPS so she can particpate in the dialogues and forums. I myself have to revert to CAPS often because of my sight.
To me, CAPS are so much easier in the eyes when one has to strain using a small computer monitor. Sorry I feel this way. Normally I do not comment, only enjoy the reading and the wonderful pics.
AMAZING!
I'LL KILL THEM ALL FOR TAKING DOWN THE J&I WARDS ALONG WITH THE SPIRES AND ALL THE NURSES HOMES ,ECT
I went there the other day 3/22/06 ,i live nearby ,they are saving one of the spires they have it on a pallet fully intact, i was able to drive up the main driveway ,i was in a commercial truck so i blended in,they are saving a lot of the bricks too ,i heard they are only keeping a third of the original building..
I hope the people that live in those apartments are continously haunted by whatever rewsides on that land for being part of the desecration of such a beautiful part of history. And to the corporate assholes that care more more about money and their country club membership than a piece of history may god have mercy on your souls.
I posted on a previous picture that a brick from Danvers was going for $26 on e-bay, plus $19.50 shipping.

I absolutely agree with Jules this did not have to happen. AvalonBay is the company that bought the property and have demolished almost all of the site. So, I hope they go bankrupt and that the place makes no money for them. They could have used the entire Kirkbride building for a museum or art museum or whatever. It just goes to show that money talks -- and you know what walks. It disgusts me entirely.
Nice!! Cain I have it??
As I said in the other spire picture in the other gallery, they are saving the spires and they are selling them off for a few thousand a piece. They also sold all of the bricks to some guy in Oklahoma I think.
That's good news -- at least not everything is going to the land fill. Those slate roof tiles should be worth some bucks if they are intact. [huge sigh]
To think all that great Danversport brick, ending up as ammunition in an Oklahoma tornado.
They didn't sell all of them a few got away Tee hee hee
And who did they get away with, pray tell!!
I got one from a friend, of a friend who either works or worked, (not clear ) the overnight security detail. The actual friend list may be longer but I got a brick.
Yeah who got a flatbed truck up there unnoticed and took off with a spire
Some man just recently purchased a spire to attach to his home. Cant remember his name, very recent, I think it is in the Danvers paper. Crazy.
John Archer
Janice, you can BUY the slate tiles off of ebay for $9.99 a piece but, so sorry, that doesn't include shipping or handling.
i drove by there tonight and there are only 3 buildings left... the center admin building and 2 of the wings on each side... all of the others have been torn down.... it's really sad... they sold the spires for $20,000 and they were selling the slate on the roof for $2 million... i only know that because i worked for a stone yard that almost bought it all
the spires sold for $20,000 EACH by the way
And who bought them and what are they going to do with them? Also, who gets the profits from the sale???
John Archer has one, although I don't know much about the transaction. He is standing in front of the detached spire in this news article photograph - http://www2.townonline...2221&format=text

Also found some shots of another spire and the metal ornament that everyone wanted to have, they look to be ready for auctioning off. There are some photos of the Kirkbride being gutted on the second page as well. http://community.websh...lbum/551863350xjSrDw
Motts, thanks for the links. Though it's so sad to look at the Kirkbride in such a state - I hate buildings that are half gone. It's like they've been amputated somehow.
Seeing these pictures really make me want to get out and explore. Though I dont know why I'd wish anyone ill who would move into apartments that are built where this place now is, thats just silly.
I HAVE A FEELING SOMETHING BAD IS GONNA HAPPEN WHEN BUILDING THE APARTMENTS OR A LITTLE WHILE AFTER THERE BUILT. LIKE A HUGE FIRE KILLING MOST OF THE RESIDENTS AND THEN I GETS CLOSED DOWN JUST A GUT FEELING!
i hope not .
Let us all be thankfull that at least part of the old building will be restored. It could have been far worse.

i also have a gut feeling that something bad is going to happen
Well it did, the morning of Easter Eve, 3 60-70% completed apartment buildings burnt down
This was one huge fire, seen for miles! Destroyed 7 new apartment buildings that were not completed yet. There was an areal shot of it in the Worcester Telegram.
I went to the Avalon Bay webcam to see if I can see shots of the place after the fire and they put a password protect on it.

These spires remind of the ones that are on Worcester States' Kirkbride buildings.

I am curious to know how these fires started.
Kirkbride is one of the most inspiering Archatechs
This is maddening! A gargantuan mausoleum of Gothic beauty, and shrine to the better treatment of the mentally ill, torn down--to make way for trendy apartments! That is stupidity and GREED at its finest. Why didn't those corporate clowns RENOVATE ALL OF THE RUINS? More money for them! Maybe they couldn't find that many avante-gard to live there? This historical beauty should have been protected and saved! If even by sanction from a higher authority. (Happy Birthday, Dear President....) The haunting beauty of the place can never be surplanted or duplicated. Kind'a like a National Forest. Living in one of those stately apartments would be interesting, indeed. Especially with all those poor, dead, miserable souls wandering about. I wouldn't want to be so up close and personal--akin--to those former occupants. I'm afraid I would have a tendency to wake up screaming in the middle of the night, and slobbering into my pillow!
id love to have my own Kirkbride building and have it completely redone to when it was first built. its sad to see the building gone and demolished. some buildings deserve to be torn down, but this one deserved to be fully restored, preserved, and reactivated whenever anything like this ever happened again. God only knows when we will have a long line of mentally unstable people again...
