Although this picture is up there in my top 10 as well. Gads, you have this down to a science!
Bravo again! Great photography! And I'm blown away by the effort and care put into making this building beautiful for those who had to live there. There are so many gorgeous architectural details -- and it certainly would have been cheaper, easier and faster NOT to have bothered with all that. How wonderful they cared enough to go to the trouble. Doesn't this one look llike it could be a part of an Elizabethan maoor house if you just cover the roof with your hand? Amazing!
Yeah This Pack is great. I Like the way you made it look so glumy (Sorry for my spelling)
I agree, this place is a unique piece of art that should not be destroyed for the sake of creating yet another set of condos.
You got balls being on those slate roofs to take the some of the best photos that I have seen. The angles, the black and white photos. You got talent, carry on brother and keep up the work, the world needs you to keep the memory fresh in a medium we all can all relate to. You have enhanced my life with your grasp what it's about. John.
motts, thank you, your site is so important, these pix are so moving and your photography is masterful! plus, credit due to the unspeakable beauty of the place itself. i don't know why i never went in to explore, lots of friends did, though. i did venture into one house, ( john mac, maybe you would know it, more towards the river in the woods, almost a ranch style? on hospital hill side, i mean the sledding part of the hill). the floor was warped like ocean waves & we heard probably what was a racoon & left...
i used to sit in the shadow of those buildings for hours in summer w/ sketchbook and snacks. & camera- it was so quiet, and eerie too, in bright sun. i love that place. my mom taught me to drive there. my friends were arrested there. another friend used to be a resident there. ah, the memories!
"would that this odd dreamscape be preserved, impractical as it may seem, as a living museum of the element of uncertainty-- a reminder for those who find it helpful to be reminded that we are never really in control of our lives."
sorry for the schmucky prose, but i wrote it about NSH for an essay assignment. highly romanticized, my apologies to those in human services & those who experienced the real deal, it's purely from an artistic observer perspective.
does anyone remember suntan man, chief joe 3 hats, or beauford? i believe they have all passed on. and unfortunately i believe many folks only knew them by those monikers... altho beauford's name was beauford. all guys who were let go when the hospital started closing.
i've not been back since the demo started cuz it's hard to watch things change.
thanks motts
do you know about the olmstead house at jamaica pond in jamaica plain, boston? please come & shoot it, i think it's coming down soon.
Its amazing that these beautiful places were ever abandoned in the first place. Have you ever thought of a trip to Povilia, Italy? ((im sorry if i spelled that wrong))
Ya Ro, remember the suntan man standing under the clock like he was a part of the architecture and he was. All our characters were a part of our hearts. They people who gave us pause to think how we all play a part in this great cosmic chess game of life. You are by no means anything that borders on the term schmucky but as like myself a dedicated romantic.
beautiful pic
decrepid and wonderful
makes me think of The Munsters!
A picture is worth a thousand words
A visit must be worth a thousand pictures
my friend and i went for a drive down from NH yesterday afternoon. . . and were very disappointed to find only 2 or 3 buildings still remaining. i got a few nice shots but the place was crawling with police, and state property signs. it would have been a dream come true to be able to go inside--- thank god this website exists so those of us unlucky enough to never enter and get that close can still experience its dramatic effects
I my self have attempte to enter this place, and its on lock down. If anyone knows how to get me in let me know.
Ooooo, another wonderful shot.
