Over The Edge

Over The Edge

The walkways were actually made of 2 inch thick glass underneath, so the guards could see up from the ground floor. Now they have an inch of dirt on top, making them opaque... I'm not sure how sturdy they really were, some glass panes were cracked and chipped.

I've seen stuff about this place on TV.....is THIS the place that was where the phrase "Up the river" was coined, or was that somewhere else?
You'd thing theyd just use metal bars/ checked metal? on the floor, like some stairs you have these days, you can still see through them
Yeah, walking on glass, no matter how thick it is, does not sound like a good idea! It would really hurt if one of those broke out from underneath you!!!
that's an innovative idea really. Smart.
Did they have plexi-glass back then? Maybe it was made out of that. i can't imagine they would put breakable glass in a jail.
Really, really, late to comment on this, but "Up the river" was a refrence to Sing Sing Prison which is right on the Hudson river and hence "up the river" from New York City.
i really hope these people get help really soon cause this place is really bad looking!
Uh.. Brittany.. You DO realize that letchworth Village is no longer a mental institution, yes?
Glass floors arereallynot that bad. The old library in my town has a glass floored mezzanine in it. The floor has a couple of cracksin it, but they have not felt it neccesarry to repire them, and I have been going there for over 20 years. By the wat our old library is now the town museum so it is a well kept building.
That's probably armoured glass, with one or more layers of strong plastic laminated into it (like any car's windshield) and it's absolutely safe even if it's cracked
oooops
thats some nasty sh*t
