looks like a lighthouse wanna be
I always understood that the property owner built it so he could watch the Trotters racing in town.
Thanks, Tim! I've been waiting 4 1/2 months to hear this! :-)
i was told someone hung themselves in that tower and it was actually told to me by a priest.is there any truth to that?
Beautiful shot!
to think that once i went to this school and to see these pictures has sadden my heart
motts i recently went to this site they tore down the mansion . there is a fence keeping you from going to the tower and school .
Beautiful photo! PLease tell me they're not tearing down this tower! Where do you find such architecture in this day and age?
What was the purpose of this tower?

It reminds me of the Dark Tower in Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
Most facinating i hope you went inside!
Originally, a water tower. Later, storage. Students liked to sneek smokes in there.
MY DAD, BOB JOHNSON, REPAIRED THE ROOF AND PAINTED THE WATER TOWER A DARK GREEN BACK IN 55 OR 56. HE RIGGED UP A BOSEN CHAIR TO GO UP AND DOWN AND SPRAY THE TOWER. I STILL REMEMBER HE WORE A SAILORS WHITE HAT INSIDE OUT TO COVER HIS HEAD. HE WORKED THERE FOR MANY YEARS STARTING IN 1939. HIS BROTHER, FATHER FRED JOHNSON, MY UNCLE WAS AT ONE TIME THE PREFECT AT THE SCHOOL. HE IS NOW BURIED IN THE CEMETARY OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE TOWER. FATHER FRED GAVE ME MY FIRST HAIRCUT IN HIS ROOM IN THE (NOW GONE) ADMIN BUILDING WHEN I WAS THREE YEARS OLD.
THERE ARE MANY MANY MEMORIES IN MY FAMILY OF THE SALESIAN SCHOOL.
THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE ON THIS SITE.

Chris--There are no historical records to back that story up. I heard the same thing as did everyone else in Goshen. When I asked around, there are no reports to substantiate it and no death records as well.
I think this is a wonderful shot. All that stone and light.
This reminds me of that movie, " The Wicker Man"!
But Goshen where?
Goshen, New York (Orange County), in the Hudson Valley, about 40 or 50 miles west-north-west of NYC.
Does anyone know what building was in front of the school, closer to the road? It's gone now, except some bits of the stone foundation - an interesting ruin.
Also, who was Dominic Savio? There's a memorial to him on the same knoll as the water tower.
I like the photo, by the way. I have to get out there with my camera, too.
Hello...I found Dominic Savio - seems he was a saint.

i have been in the school with no problem. but there are cameras by the tower!!!!!be careful!
it reminds me of the tower from "stay alive"! such a creepy picture! love it. and the fact that its in black and white adds to the spooky effect.
i went to the camp for many years, until 1986. this is a great shot! very creepy as a kid. the mansion was actually 2 old big houses merged together way back sometime. the grounds were also one of the northern most points for the underground railroad in the civil wars days.
my mum had a bell tower like that at her all girls school in london, school was caled beaverwood, and this looks just like it.
I attended the Camp in the summer duirng the 1958-1959. The Priests and Brothers at that time were good and at that time I knew of no abusive behavior. It was a great place to be, away from Brookyln for the summer and be around farm animals, horses, fields of corn.
I attended camp there in 1959 and 1960. I remember Fr. Paul Brault, a Canadian. The tower was used as a music tower. My mom brought up a record for Fr. Paul in French and he played it on the tower's loudspeaker. The tower was green trimmed with white. There was also a small convent by the roadside for Salesian nuns from Italy. Dominic Savio was a saint. I became an altar boy there..the chapel was beautiful on the main floor. Every Sunday as visiting hours ended, all campers filed in there for Benediction, then down the other end of the hall for a movie in the gym. kkjfkkp@hotmail.com
I went to sleep away camp there for 3 summers,68,69,70. It was a creepy place. The salesians were good to us. Most of us were from the city. The tower was locked up, but we got in it. The view was spectacular, but the place was spooky. We would wake up every morning to a loud speaker mounted on the tower, it played,"you're a good man Charlie Brown" It had a nice lake, horses, and tons of stuff to do. I was scared to walk thru the halls alone, the place was just spooky. There were lots of stories about lights going on and off, draws opening up, and the mausoleum was really creepy. LAter I went to Salesian High School in New Rochelle and ran into some of the same priests and brothers. All in all they were good summers, but the place was pretty ghostly, lots of stories about tunnels leading into the town.
