We were cruising through the Pine Barrens of New Jersey on an exceptionally hot and humid September day... only a short walk under that blazing sun sent the sweat running into the eyes. The Menantico Colony didn't seem to be much more than a small cluster of houses on some farmland, but we didn't have much else to photograph out down this way... so out we ventured. The small chapel, although modern, seemed interesting enough for the effort; unfortunately it was secured well. The residences were all wide open and a few floors were rotted out pretty thoroughly; I wondered when this place closed.
Although the Menantico Colony isn't very architecturally stimulating, the ties to the Vineland Training School and the history there are quite interesting (eg. Henry Goddard's The Kallikak Family, which spurred movements in compulsory sterilization and eugenics).
