Behind the Walls
Eastern State always seemed like a great place to take a tour on a free weekend; when I found out that there was an entire hospital wing closed off to the general public it became a necessity!
I had a great time, as the private tour guide wasn't very restrictive (once I was yelled at for stepping in a pothole on a guided tour at a different location), and the areas open to the general public were very interesting and photogenic to boot. Although we couldn't sneak away, we got to see a good amount of the place that I did not know was accessible, and of course the prison itself predates most abandoned locations that exist in the northeast United States. The history as well as the superb architecture that had remained pretty consistent throughout the life of the institution were both fascinating and exciting to walk through.
