Cold and Empty
We quickly snuck onto the campus and searched for a way inside the beautiful, Tudor-style administration building. I wanted to take photos of the buildings very badly, but unfortunately the police were patrolling the campus and we did not want to be spotted. Crows perched on the massive trees above watched us closely but remained silent as we slid into the chilly building. It was quite clean and empty, and a trip through the tunnels to the medical building only yielded a solidly sealed door. I hadn't taken my camera out yet, but after getting back upstairs we spotted a small cottage building in the middle of a field, which neither one of us had been inside before. Taking a risk, we hiked quickly towards the structure; upon entering, we saw a very clean interior once again, but it was more interesting than administration nonetheless. The rooms seemed pretty secure and had a certain vibe to them which is difficult to describe. Perhaps this was the cottage visited by the senator posing as an attendant in 1985, revealing the conditions in the hospital, who knows?
After getting off the main campus, we took a trip to the hospital's patient cemetery. A dirt road led us to a brown and dismal field atop a small hill; rows of small stones poked out of the dead grass, leaning in all different directions. A small cluster of trees surrounded a memorial to the patients buried underneath, but did little to cheer up the landscape. I left the cemetery in solemn silence, yet eager to return to such a unique place.
