A lot of conscientious objectors were assigned to work in places like Byberry.  I have to wonder if the judges were thinking, "after a few months kicking it in Byberry, they'll beg for Italy!"

"Ectoplasmic Terrier" comes from a piece of music by avant-garde composer Jackson Mac Low (now deceased) called "Thanks," which calls for any number of performers to produce any chosen vocal sounds, words, phrases, or sentences.  It is up to the performers to ad lib, or not, or fall silent, or pick up a new sound, phrase, etc.  Thus the performers find rhythm, patterns, and cadences via chance operations.  If I go much further, I'll start lecturing on music post-John Cage (who is to modern music what Einstein is to modern mathematics).  I don't know what the origin of the phrase "ectoplasmic terrier" is, but I always thought it was catchy.
So, among word strings such as "native economy buying bisexual lettuce reduction jarring," and "Chomskyan disapprobation necrology," two of the voices start sparring back and forth, "ectoplasmic terrier...King Kong...ectoplasmic terrier...King Kong...ectoplasmic terrier...."
At least that's the rendition of "Thanks" I'm familiar with, found here: http://www.experimentalintermedia.org/xi/110.shtml

You wouldn't know it listening to NPR programming, but notated music evolved into incredibly rich and complex forms in the 20th century.  A few key concepts (and their catalysts): the twelve note method (Arnold Schoenberg),  microtonalities (Henry Cowell, Lou Harrison), chance operations (John Cage, Earle Brown, David Tudor), electronics (Edgard Varese, Otto Luening, Milton Babbitt).
If you're interested, I'd start with those developments and composers.  The disadvantage so-called "avant-garde" music has is it's conceptual and cerebral above all.  Before you can feel it in your body, the music needs to go through an intellectual process.  That is, J.S. Bach wrote highly intellectual music, but you don't need to think about why he wrote what he wrote in order to enjoy it.  Here is a link to the most misunderstood musical composition of all time--John Cage's 4'33" --
