Hmm ... unless we're buying trannies on E-bay, I do believe we're diverting from the topic.  I'll admit resonsibility as soon as the tears clear from my eyes from laughing so damned hard.

Just received several sets of commitment papers from Portland, Oregon from the 1880s and 1890s.  I was going to try to scan more of the pages, but these are in pretty fragile shape, so I'll need to fix them somehow first.

Soon as I can figure a way to flatten them out without breaking them, I'll scan them and put them up.  Extended they are slightly larger than letter size, and my flat bed scanner only can handle letter size pix.

Wow Lynne,  looking at these really chokes me up,  seeing a name and date put on paper.    It makes it become a human thing,  not just events that happened in the past.

Great find,  hon.

The mail came today - I was thinking it mightn't, with the 4th and all.  Poor federal workers - no wonder they go postal all the time.  Sad
Anyways, here:

Brattleboro Retreat in Vermont was originally a private asylum and later a state asylum.  They used to sponsor recreational activities that they called "amusements" for the people who lived there.  Today I received 5 handbills from 1887 describing some of the activities held there that year:

lynne, i have a question. i looked at all the pics you posted and one thing comes to my eye. it may have been addressed earlier but i have to ask. on many of the lunatic papers there is a name and date then an area that says admitted wich is blank then a filing date. why are so many admission dates blank? i figure if anyone knows itll be you. Well, I could make something up, but the truth is that I don't know.  These days when everything has to have every "t" crossed and every "i" dotted or it's not legal, it's funny to think there was ever a time you could be so slack about filling things in.  My guess is that they had the blank forms and then just filled in what they had time for.  Maybe they were more "certification papers" than "admission papers".
The last document I put up was a petition for a "state lunatic asylum" in New Jersey, so they left all that info blank so each town could add their place of residence as a petititoner asking for a new facility for the state.  This one wasn't dated and is from Morris Plains, so I don't know if it was sent out before the institution at Morris Plains was built or if it had already been built and they realized they needed another one due to overcrowding.
