Has anyone read Maverick Mind by Cheri Florence, Ph.D??   It's a great book about how a mother reached her autistic son.  It really makes you think about what is "normal".

I like Temple Grandin's books also.  She is a genius inventory with autism who engineers machinery for the cattle industry.  She reportedly has a brilliant mind in this specific area but can't balance her checkbook, etc.  She's very interesting because of the way she describes childhood.

I saw a documentry about her 18 months ago, & found it very interesting.  She's contributed to a few websites as well, like this one.

I've worried about the possible genetic factors for years.  I grew up in what we thought at the time was a very nice, clean, small town in Montana.  It has since been declared a Superfund Site due to the creosote polluting the groundwater.  As if that weren't enough, we were all likely exposed to tremolite, which contains asbestos fibers in raw form from a completely different source.

You want to scare yourself sometime, look up Libby MT in conjunction with St. Regis (lumber company) and WR Grace (insulation company).  I am eligible for free yearly testing for asbestosis and mesotheleoma, but I've never done it.  For one, I'd have to go back to Libby to do so.  And for another, there is nothing can be done for the cancer, even if detected early.  I've always been afraid that if I went to the clinic and reported myself as possibly exposed, that my insurance would cancel and I'd never be able to get it again.  Or they'd raise the rates so high that I couldn't afford it.  I know that it's supposed to be absolutely secure information, but I just don't trust them.
