It was the time of year, the time of day, for a small insistent sadness to pass into the texture of things. Dusk, silence, iron chill.

Thanks.  I'm glad you're liking these.

There is never more than one deceased person in each photograph.

Yeah. That one in the window creeps me right out.

The baby in the wicker chair, 6th from the bottom, disturbs me to no end.  Shocked  Just the panic stricken expression alone would bother me, even if this child were alive.  But on a dead person...that photo made my insides jump.

That first photo is amazing too.  That woman doesn't even look dead, let alone 9 days dead!  Was she kept in an ice cold room?  I don't see how the corpse wouldn't be showing more signs of deterioration.  Unless I'm mistaken, wasn't embalming still in its infancy back then?

#2 doesn't look dead either.  More like she's daydreaming or sedated (quite a few of these people have that look).

The baby photos are all heartbreaking.  The girl in photo #5 (holding her dead brother) looks rather pissed off.  Can't say I blame her.

YEah that one is really disturbing, and what makes it creepier for me is that it looks like her skull was broken in on the left side, although i guess that's just from the picture.

and I swear that the guy in the last pic is decapitated....

I found this website that has a link to some others as well as a history of each.  It's pretty interesting when you get into it.

I don't post much, but I was just researching p.m. photos and found this website.

Here's some more post-mortem photographs from turn of the century:

www.paulfrecker.com  This is an extensive collection of 1900 photography.  EDIT -- there are nudes in this collection-- sorry if it offends.

I remember a relative snapping a "casket" photo of my mom at the close of her funeral. It bothered me to no end, but I said nothing, thinking "If gives comfort, who am I to argue?"  I didn't feel the need to repeat the scene for myself.

That's really sad stuff. At first I was like, "Why's everyone lying down?" then I re-read the thread title. Amazing how our attitude toward death has changed, I don't think anyone would do this stuff today. I could be wrong, though, I try not to think about dying children too much.

G-race, I know of a few people who take pictures of dead loved ones.  My M-I-L wanted a picture of F-I-L in the casket and as I stated above, a relative at my mom's funeral took a photo.

My family is from the rural south, so I've wondered if it's tradition.  I've been doing some genealogy work and found a few photos like in my history.

It makes sense to do this, but I still find it creepy. I just can't imagine taking a picture of a deceased child, but I have two kids and thinking about the pain the folks had to have been in blows my mind.
