Bronchitis
«
on:
February 26, 2008, 06:59:56 am »
So i just got diagnosed with it yesterday. Could anyone give me some background information on it? My doctor didn't really explain what it was, or what i could and couldn't do until the bacteria cleans up. The thing i'm most curious about is smoking, as he didn't tell me to stop while taking the medication. Any thoughts on this are much appreciated.

The only thing I can say, not being a doc, is the obvious. You have bronchitis. Stop smoking. Use the patch, and maybe, when the bronchitis is gone, you might not even
want
to go back to smoking! That would just be a bonus!
Take care of yourself.....Hope you feel better!

Yeah...smoking will pretty much make it worse. Smoking will make anything worse.
Bronchitis is sort of like asthma but it's a temporary condition, people typically get it when they get a bad chest cold (and if you get them often, it'll probably recur). It's an inflammation of the bronchial tubes in your lungs.
That's really all I know from a medical background, I don't think there's much more you need to know. In my personal experience, it prevents me from hacking up all the nasty stuff in my chest, and if that stuff stays there and festers, I start to develop pneumonia.
What kind of medication did your doctor give you?

Thanks for the information everyone. I'll definetly hold back on the smoking, and who knows, maybe i will wind up quitting. My doctor put me on some z-pack antibiotic medication. It feels like it's working, although slowly. I'm starting to get tired of coughing up lung fluid every hour.

Best of luck, Dawg. I haven't smoked for a few years and quitting was the best thing I ever did. I reckon I must have spent something like 40 to 50 THOUSAND Dollars on ciggies over the years.

Bronchitis is sort of like asthma but it's a temporary condition,
From a toddler I was repetitively treated for bronchitis, then at 11 I was taken to a different doctor who diagnosed me as asthmatic. At 30 was told I'm not asthmatic just a hyperventilator with allergies.
Good luck on the no smoking thing, babe. I used to live with a smoker (he only smoked outside though) for six years, asthma/bronchitis/allergy gave me a lot of trouble, but having been in a smokefree environment for three years now it's pretty much non-existant, so it can only be a good thing, eh.

Yeah quitting is definetly a good thing. It's awkward being the only smoker in my family, and always having to go outside when i need one. But yeah, its not like it's benefiting my health at all. But thanks for the help and information all! I'm already feeling better from the medication.

Hey I hope you feel better soon! Bronchitis is a pain. Did the doctor give you a nebulizer treatment? Last time I had it, my doc gave me one (it's breathing medicated air through a tube)
(sorry I cant explain better) Between the treatment and antibiotics, it cleared up pretty fast. I smoke also and didn't quit when I got sick.
Dumb!!! I wish I had.

WebMD: Understanding Bronchitis
This should answer your questions about smoking. Bottom line is that you're better off NOT smoking and/or quitting.
My birth-father smoked for MOST of his life (which equates now to around 50+ years of snoking) and he got a prescription for Chantix and he was able to quit with no relapse at all. Best part is many insurances cover the drug.
GET WELL SOON!!!

Haha, I thought no one was giving out those suckers anymore. Rather, even using them to treat bronchitis. I still have my very old, very obsolete nebulizer machine that my doctor gave me when I was like, 4 (we didn't have the money to buy one so they gave it to us). And steadily through the years my mother and I noticed that my father kept getting an inhaler for his, while I was still using that thing.

Nebulizers are most certainly NOT a thing of the past. There is no other effective way to deliver the needed medication to pediatric patients who are too young to use an inhaler and also in adult patiensts when their conventional inhalers are ineffective such as severe asthma or an out-of-control acute attack.
I just purchased a compact one that I can travel with that's 1/8 the size of my old bulky one...the unit itself is about the size of my film SLR camera!
