This castle was built by a Norman baron, Randolph de Blundevile in about 1220-1230.

It was last used by John of Gaunt's family from 1311. King Henry IV was born here in 1366 and it became a Royal Castle, although never used as a royal residence.

By about 1640 the castle was abandoned and in decay, but it was held briefly by Royalist troops in the civil war up to 1643.
At the battle of Winceby (12th October 1643) nearby, Cromwell had his horse shot dead under him but he took another mount and lead the Parliamentary forces to victory. They then deliberately ruined the castle.

By 1949 the castle had had its stone robbed for other buildings and was just a grassy mound. Since then, the castle has passed into the hands of English Heritage and has been excavated and partly restored. The lower few feet of the curtain wall and the moat remain.

As it was...

Oh wow!  I really like your last 3 shots,  that's quite a big 'un!   That's what I really envy you for Colin,  is the really old history and ruins there.  Here,  we're so "young" especially out west where I am.   Undecided

Great set!

Bill,

This is the 2nd set I've seen from the new camera.  It definitely has greater clarity than the old one!  Good set.

I would love to see something like that, beautiful pics.

Yeah, this new camera is definitely nicer looking than the old one!  Of course, it helps that there is a great photographer behind it... Grin
