Ok so my four year old has sever ocd along with his autism. They want me to consider two drugs that I know nothing about. I have the pharmacy printing information on it but still not so sure on the whole drug thing.

So does anyone have any info on the following:
luuox
fluvoxamine
lexapro

If so can you give your input on these drugs. wethere they helped you or not. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi.  I don't know anything about autistism and medication.  I have had some OCD symptoms myself though.  I haven't taken any of meds you listed.  I did therapy for 3 years, that helped.  I did try some other meds.  But I hesitate to reccomend them.

I was wondering if you belong to any groups with others who have the same questions as you about dealing with autism issues.

How necessary is it for your son to be on meds?  Is he hurting himself or anyone?  Plus he's 4 yrs old, his brain is still developing.  Is it possible he's going through a growth spurt?

I have another question- is OCD a part of autism?  I watched recently a film made my a woman with autism who learned to talk through a typing/ talking computer.  It was called "Autism is a World". Have you seen it? She liked water.  Playing with it was where she would zone out.  I think autism is pretty interesting.  My friend has a sister in Pa. who is autistic, and told me stories about her. There are so many different ways of being/seeing in this world.

It is wise of you to ask around, and to get your questions answered. You are your best advocate, I hope you get the info you're searching for. Best to you and your son.  Rachey.

Same disclaimer as Rachey...I am NOT a doctor but know a bit about the meds.
Do you mean Luvox?  Fluvoximine is an SSRI and works by increasing serotonin levels. I understood it hasn't been approved for OCD in kids under 8 years old.
Lexapro is also used as an antidepressant, similar to Celexa, and works by boosting serotonin levels also. Lexapro hasn't been approved for anyone under 18 years old, as far as I know.
I've been on it; it can make you drowsy. It isn't recommended if you have a seizure disorder.
I was  taking it for totally different reasons than your son.
Four years old is awfully young to be medicating like this w/o serious reasons.
I wish the best for you and your son. I would talk at length with the doctor and understand his reasoning before agreeing to use these drugs. I read Maverick Mind by Cheri Florence PhD. It was very inspiring.

Luvox was the brand-name for Fluvoxamine but is no longer being made.

What questions do you have about Fluvoxamine and Lexapro specifically in regards to pediatric use?

thanks guys. He started the fluvoximine. His rituals were seriously delaying daily activities. Just wasnt sure what ssris do. he seems to be doing ok. I was told it could take up to six weeks to see improvement. We have tried tons of therapy. Nothing working. So this was a hope.

i will watch for your message lynn thanks:)
