Gorgeous building.  It reminds me somewhat of Worcester.

It's awesome to see the rennovations - I know little about this hospital, but hearing about someone keeping a Kirkbride in good condition is awesome...

Lynne, didn't you used to work in a Kirkbride (my fading memory of readin old posts...)
... There is an active Kirkbride about two hours away from where I live, I've thought about applying to work there... so I could work in a Kirkbride building - they have the perfect job for me, but moving... putting the kids in different schools... probably taking a cut in pay... to do the same thing I already do... Nobody else would understand my reasons...

I wish!  No, I have visited (i.e., went to meetings, met with friends and/or patients, or interviewed at) a number of state hospitals - Western State in Tacoma, Washington; Western State in Staunton, Virginia (the old one that's being turned into apartments plus the new one); Southwest State in Marion, Virginia; Kankakee State Hospital in Illinois; DeJarnette in Virginia (the old one plus the new one); Napa State Hospital in California; Madison State Hospital in Indiana; and I spent my first 5 years several miles up the same road as Dixmont, plus I have worked at and visited a lot of developmental centers (Utah, Washington, Indiana, Virginia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Illinois), but most, if not all, of those were on cottage plans.

Sigh . . .

I need me a Kirkbride.    Sad

Most UEers have seen more hospitals than I have, although most of my visits are while the hospitals are still active.  That's why I enjoy this site so much.   Smiley

Beautiful building. It's nice to see a kirk still in use, and being so meticulously cared for. Thanks for sharing your shots.  Smiley
