we got a new resident yesterday. he came from home and the family was very mean towards us for no reason. well he was confused but was quiet till..... it was bed time.. fist fights with other resident's/ punching the walls/kicking doors and chasing us. it took two of us to hold him as the nurse gave him a shot. then all three of us to hold him down for 20 min till it took affect . we are a no restraint facility so we have to let the residents use us as pinatas. he broke my glasses now i got to buy a new pair. anyone else here go through this type of fun at your work?

It bothers me that half the places I have worked at have made you pay for your own glasses, clothes, cars, etc., if someone busts them up.  One place I was at they made us file a police report before they would reimburse us for anything.  Now, who in their right mind is going to file a police report against a tiny demented 85-pound woman, even though she is stronger than 15 wildcats in a sack?

My husband's truck was beat in with a hoe by one of my clients when I took three guys out on a walk and one of them became angry with me because I was actively ignoring some inappropriate comments he was making, so he picked up a hoe and beat our truck till it was not a pretty site.  I had to deal with the other two guys, keeping them calm while I disarmed the first guy, and then walk back to the living area with the three of them (about 1/2 a mile away) while acting like it was no problem that our truck was bashed in.  I refused to file a police report against the man because it wasn't his fault - he used to lose it - it was part of his problem - frankly I was just happy he didn't use the hoe on me or one of the other two guys.  But that was a costly repair that we had to pay for . . .

as far as my glasses go the last time i got a pair broken it took two months to get any real sorta type of answer about them. so this time i'm going to the family. i get headaches if i don't wear them

RE prolly meant the people that make it so hard to get reimbursed.

I would rather not get reimbursed than have it paid by someone who is not responsible for their actions due to their intellectual disability or mental illness, but since the rate of property destruction and aggression is not insignificant at places where people are sent away, any place that values its employees needs to have thought about this in advance.

Sorry - stepping down off soap box now (after going out and looking at our poor old bashed-in truck in the driveway again  Cheesy).

I don't go through it at work.  I go through it at home.  It's been getting better as she is learning how to manage her feelings, but some days she still can't control it.  We have lost many pairs of glasses.  I'd really feel bad if she broke someone outside of the family's glasses.  I doubt we could pay for someone else's glasses.  I have done without mine because they got broken and we couldn't afford to pay for it.  I have had to borrow money from my dad for glasses that got broken too.  I think it is a shame that it is so hard for you to get reimbursed for your glasses.  I just wish you weren't put in a position where you feel you will have to go to the family.  I know how terrible I would feel.

When i moved to Wi, i started working for a facility that deals witht he Developmentally Disabled.  The first house i was placed in had an 18 year old that lived with his dad for the  18 and a half  years of his life.  We had the hardest time with this guy.  HE could be a sewwtheart, but only if he was getting goodies like chocolate, cookies, or shakes.  Trying to take him to the dr was a joke, and did i mention he was 6'1, and couldnt walk very good, but he could crawl adn he moved faster than most people could.  He had a wheelchair, but it was used as a weapon, anyhting that wasnt bolted down was thrown at your head.  It got to the point that we had to move him to the other side of the house and lock the doors of the residents rooms so he didnt harm them physically.  If you were in his way there was hell to pay.  He only got me twice, we had a really good repor with each other, but when his dad didnt come onthe days he wanted it was a day form hell.  The two times he got me, it was my face and glasses, he broke them, and the facility refused to pay them, bc "he sisnt know what he was doing". BS, he knwe what he was ding bc he would laugh at you and tell you he'll do it again.

I'd just make sure the family are aware of what's happened in the nicest possible way you can Z. If that had been my Dad who had done that, we, the family would definitely pay for some new ones.

I didn't know that there was no form of compensation available for this sort of thing. It's not good enough.

I find this discussion to be highly imformative and interesting. I'm from the other side of the food chain I'm afraid. I was a  good mental patient.

Yea, my cousin has some sort of seizure disorder thing (the doctors still don't know after 21 years what he has), but it causes him to be inable to talk or walk. He just screams. He likes to spin those plastic rings (you know the ones babies use for teething?) on picture books. But watch out if he gets annoyed with what he's playing with... expecially if it's the plastic kids-play-along-piano thing. That thing is heavy... and it hurts. Expecially since he's around 6' and has a strong throwing arm... so he always throws it towards your head.

Ah well. My uncle has fought hard to keep him at home instead of at an institution or something. Even tried those "Help ____" ads. No one donated anything. It's really a shame since my uncle hasn't worked in a job since he was 35 due to a heart condition.
