Well, that's it folks. The two gatehouses were smashed down today. Not a trace left of the old campus standing.
you'd think they'd leave one behind, fix it up.. maybe have it be a shelter for the route 14 bus ..... but NOoooOooOo... ME SMASH! BREAK! HA HA HA!

This is the only shitty pic I have of the gate houses. I took it while driving by cruising at-least 65 mph during a snowstorm.
They were mini one-room copies of the "C" cottages and flanked the main entrance.

A pretty darn good picture if you were going by at 65 mph in a snow storm, RE!

Go down Carter Road. The section of the woods where the snail trail/catepillar trail are now gone.

I sincerely believe taking down those entrance buildings was a
statement
. A creative developer would have incorporated elements of the old campus into the new development.
If we are going to save any old structures in the country, there has to be economic
disincentive
for destroying usable buildings and a legal process, similar to an Environmental Impact Review. Profit can no longer be an excuse for waste.
Our historic preservation laws in this country have no teeth. A culture of conservation, as it exists in Europe, needs to be established, independent of economic excuses. Shouldn’t this fit into the current political dogma of preserving "tradition" and "values"? The conservatives don't conserve much, do they.

We had a lot of warehousing in this area... Eastern State School, The youth prison and Byberry. All dark but historic campuses. Now they are just memories. No commemorative plaques out front, no displays in any museum... just gone. History is history, good or bad. Don't just pretend it never happened. We can't go back once it's destroyed...

Yeah man, after the tag-fest on the gatehouses happened a month ago, I had no doubt they were going to be flattened. Not only were they demo'ed, but every brick, even the iron fence, has been removed from the area as well. Total clean-up.
What I DIDN'T think was going to happen was the removal of the bridge. Man, that's going to cause some serious shit because of the county line border between Philly and Bucks, AND the squashing from 12 lanes to 4 is all right there, not to mention public transportation routes and the Philadelphia Turnpike entrance.

As much as I'd hate to see it go, I have a feeling it will.
It'd be decent if the city took a bit of interest in cleaning the two parks up -- then the 55+ adults could use the walkway to use the park's gardens, trails, and woods (and whatever may be added - possibilities endless) without risking their lives and tires (to the potholes on Burling).

That bridge served as a staging area for our people every now and then. The concrete bolsters on the East end were good for arranging our packs and to get our walkies in order for the trip. At night it looked like the entrance to Hell. Started the night out right. Hail Satan-HAIL YES! Phantom!

Fact is , they wiped the Berry off the face of the earth, but they forgot about the Byberians! Last night I was out in the storm at my personal asylum complex. I counted 30 familiar tags, most of them recent, of Serial Trespassers from Byberry. Of course GD was there, along with Big John, Volknor, Beef, and ChipRJones. Cheezit and The Real Mustang Sally got up and so did LUKE. As long as we have true explorers (STs) the Berry will never really die! I feel right at home now and I welcome them to our digs. See you on the tunnel wall outside the Roundhouse-----Come and chill with us anytime------PHANTOM!

old folks arn't gona walk that far.. unless it's inside a mall. those with electric wheelchairs wont go out ether. alot of old folks never really go "out side" some will go out on their the patio to sit and take a nap. thats how those companies that sell bulk foods keep going. would younger people spend 20 bucks for icecream from a delivery truck? or just goto the store and spend 10 bucks for the same thing.
