It's been posted to the "Spam" thread, and as soon as they get here, it will be taken care of...

Thanks for the heads up... the spam has been getting bad, I'll look into some phpbb mods for the forum that might help prevent this.

Mottsie, I'm sitting at my work computer bored outta my mind, so I'm looking some up for you as we speak... Here's the best I've found:
Spam Word Blocklist:
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=354376&highlight=spam
Features:
- You can set which words are "blocked"
- You can set the action to be taken (ranges from not posting the message, to "quarantining" the message, to automatic ban)
- You can set exceptions by forum, by user, and by number of posts (so members who have had more than, say, 50 posts aren't accidentally considered spam bots)
- Full log of all events blocked, so you can check that it isn't finding false positives
- Way more than I can mention here, definitely worth it to check out...

Thanks! I'll look into this. I wish they had a validation system where someone could approve members before they are on the memberlist. I might just build something myself that does this.

As someone on bash.org once said "i'm going to become rich and famous after i invent a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet"
Post spam...get stabbed in the face...too bad there's not a mod like that  lol

ok now I have to register new users manually before they can post, this should cut down the spam but new users will need to wait longer to get on the board

Some boards do a "trial period" where the first few posts (usually 10 or so) are approved by a mod before they are posted. That would not only cut down on spam, but it would also help with a certain troll problem you're having (since mods could check IP addresses of newbies)... Also, you wouldn't be stuck doing it all yourself, since you have four magnificent mods helping out as well...

I seen something on another forum about having to post in a already established topic before you can start your own topic.

Moderating new members is not unusual, and in light of everything that has happened here, it's somewhat overdue. A little bit of extra work, but worth it in the long run, as it'll keep the forum flowing smoothly.
I do believe that spammers have a network or such, where there are lists of popular sites that can be spammed easily. Where this isn't the most heavily spammed site I know of, I'ld say it's on the 'spammers hot 100'.

Well from what I posted before made me think. There was one time the Buggly Speers link was posted under another topic then it was posted as a new topic.
May not work then. Just someone with to much time on there hands trying to make a good thing bad I guess. Must have really hurt a persons feelings but why take it out on others who don't deserve it. I am new so far as I know I havent made anyone upset. If I did let me know. I am sorry.

rickross.com has this in place on his php board. Motts, you may want to contact him or try to trace it down.
