Okay, if you've never done it.. It sucks...  Donkey balls.

I'm working through it now, I've got 2 or 3 smokes left in my pack, and that's it.
So... what I going to do in place of my cigarettes.   I'm going to learn how to spin poi.

I'll be reworking my poi pieces tonight and bringing it to work and everywhere else, as a means of distraction.

*sigh*  This stinks.

I won't know what it feels like, at least for several years...the girls I've befriended here at college are all fairly heavy smokers, except for a couple who smoke a bit less, and heck, just about everyone else here smokes. It is college after all, and an art school at that.   We had to go jogging in our First Year Seminar class one day and people were smoking while running.

But anyway...so yes, I've befriended a group of smokers, including my roommate, but the four of them insist that they aren't going to let me smoke.

I know it's difficult though, I had my own issues trying to kill a physical addiction to Paxil. And I've been trying to get my mother to stop smoking for years.

Spinning poi is (when not in practice or learning mode) the act of spinning balls of fire dangling from chains. The wick is made of kevlar.
It falls under the same kind of work that fire eaters/breathers do, only rather than blowing or eating it, you dance with it.
You don't HAVE TO light it on fire, practice ones are made with faux fur or LED glow balls.
I'm also looking at getting into using fire fans, which are big steel fans that have kevlar wicks at the top.

Most smokers I know, do everything they can to NOT push the habit on anyone else, becaue they know how hard it is on the body.
Beating physical addiction is hard, but oh, so worth it.

Oh man......  I'm a 36 year smoker.     It's harder to quit the longer you've smoked too.     Lyric honey I know you'll do this!!

Good luck and keep us posted if it will help to share.

I've tried to quit a couple times. Only once was it really serious, as i was doing it so i could be with a girl whom i liked very much. I relapsed after a week due to the issues in our relationship being very strenuous

Hell, the whole damn forum'll help you - you've got a great support group.

That is very true.  My husband and I tried to quit months back, we did not succeed.  I think we are ready to try again.   We will help you through this.  It will be one of the hardest things you have ever done, but it will be worth it.

Wow Lyric, you keep bringing up great topics!

My husband and I both smoke. In the past when we have tried to quit I have done rather well but he wasn't really committed. He has asthma and FINALLY went to the doctor this past week to find out his options to quit for good. He has started taking Wellbutrin. Since this takes a little while to build in his system we don't know how much it will help yet. Even though tonight he mentioned he isn't craving one as much.

I have smoked since I was 10 yrs old and I am now 32. I have quit for a year here and there then gone back to it. I am not a heavy smoker. In fact if I am not in a social setting, I only smoke 2 maybe 3 tops a day. BUT put me in with other smokers or give me a beer and, whoa!

Now, back to you...LOL I don't know you well but I believe you can do this. It will be hard but so many people have proven it can be done. Our neighbor quit 11 years ago and she told my hubby to put a couple cig. butts in a baggie and carry them with you. Everytime you get the urge to smoke, open it and take a wiff...A type of aromatherapy albeit a nasty one... She said it worked for her...Best of luck to you hon!

I've never smoked tobacco products. I tried one of my Dad's filterless Pall Mall's back when I was a kid and after I was done with the spins, vomitting, and sweating profusely, I realized tobacco was not for me.

I do smoke though, just green leaves instead of brown ones!

Seriously. If you really want to, you can do it. I stopped on April 9 last year but that was the day I had a heart attack, which of course was partly brought on by smoking...

.

Same here.  This Feb I had a heart attack. I had my last smoke on the way to the hospital.  It took me being hit in the head to clean up my act.
I want to stay alive. No more smokes for me.

My hat is off for those of you who have kicked the habit or at least have given it a try. I admire anyone who can beat the odds and if you don't understand the odds......watch the movie "The Insider" starring Russell Crowe. It is the true story of the chemist, from one of the largest tobacco companies, telling the real story about how cigarettes are created to addict those who inhale them. A very good movie that not many people have seen or are willing to watch.
