I have researched about asbestos before. The fibers that can embed into your lung tissues are microscopic. They are so tiny and sharp, they can't even be seen. It IS really in everything, Matt is right.
It is ok to have in use in your house as long as it is in great shape and coated and kept from crumbling in which it could be inhaled. For example, the very hard asbestos concrete sheet siding on many homes are virtually undestructable and are fine as long as you don't go busting them up with a hammer or something. They will keep the house in great shape on the outside and really will never need to be replaced, just painted with a special coating to keep it in good shape.
I think as long as stuff like asbestos is undisturbed, you are better off. When people try to rennovate and get rid of it in a crazy DIY trip, they are risking their safety.
The majority of our old schools have asbetos...they just seal it up really well, so it is fine. I am sure that stuff that coats the pipe like in your picture is the same crap in my kid's school in the basement which is in use with classrooms. The pipes are all along the ceiling and are up to code from what I can see. (no deterioration)
I do think that the tunnel of the old hospitals that have flaking insulation on the pipes are too safe. :? Just my humble opinion, though, LOL.

Heh...my mottos is "Wet asbestos is the best asbestos"
Don't know if it can be regarded as true, but it rhymes!
A lot of the tunnels at Danvers were soaking wet but not flooded, so the dust wouldn't kick up at you.

I recall seeing that Byberry pic and thinking the same thing. I have a 1956 Johns-Manville ad for their "Asbestos-Flexboard" product. Build a charming home with it. See all their other fine asbestos products too, you could build an entire house with the stuff. Greatest thing you can get for any and all uses! Yaaay!

When my husband went to his first Asbestos Liscence class quite a few years ago, they were discussing Johns-Mansville and the dumping grounds of all the waste in this area. While looking at maps of these dumping grounds, he pretty much learned that most of the town we live in and the next town over are chuck full of "landfills" of Mansville waste  The local skateboard park next town over is even built right on top of one of the sites. They say it's all cleaned up now  We even have a huge 80 acre area in town that the town bought from the state about 10 years ago and the town can do nothing with it because a huge mountain of the stuff sits on the land and to clean it up is not in the town "budget".

It is funny that the theater patrons found comfort in asbestos! It makes sense in the historical context, (who want to be burned in a fire) but it is total irony in a modern sense!

Haha
I've seen pics of another abandoned theater with an asbestos curtain like that. Different style, but it still had the big ASBESTOS right on front with the period after it.
