I can't help but share a bit of skepticism when an article has several references to "in my new book," "while researching my new book," ...and so forth. I feel like I'm reading an advertorial.
That said, I was impressed by the volume of thoughtful comments pinned to the piece.
The bottom line is, are the merits of deinstitutionalization outweighted by the risk of serious relapse.
It's a non-issue. There will always be institutional settings (sometimes for life) for the most seriously mentally ill. For the vast majority of MI's deinstitutionalization has been a godsend.
Who can predict when the neighbor, the grocer, the pastor will flip into a maniacal rage. Should we instituationalize them all as a precautionery measure?
Respectfully,
Chuck
