My son and I went to a very old part of this cemetery. I couldn't believe my eyes when we went deeper in. The oldest grave here is 1640 or 1648. I'll point it out later. There is also a grave for Gideon Welles. There is a school named after him in the town I live in.

1-First shot, the Memorial

2-Just looking around

3-In formation

4-Lovely

5-I've never seen graves NOT in a straight line

6-Arched

7-Symbol

8-Damage by Chipmunks

9-Another beauty

10-Side By Side

11-Draped over

12-The top

13-Sad

14-It's revolutionary!

15-Another symbol

16-Repaired

17-Cool artisanship

18-Sheep

19-War od 1812!!!!!!!

20-Civil War

21-Patched

22-More restoration

23-Paired

24-French and Indian War!!!

25-Looking around

26-I saw things here I have never seen in a cemetery as yet! I was STUNNED!

We met a couple of guys who were there giving a workshop on how to restore headstones.
Apparently, there is a very big restoration project going on here. They told Nick and I that
the tables were for the rich! If you see a table in a cemetery, it is pre-1800 something.
It was after that, that the rich started with the tall stones.

27-More....

28-And here is the oldest grave here

29-Small closed in "tables"

30-Endless

31-So much to see

32-So many tables!!

33-Fancy table

34-Creepy tree

35-Fenced in

36-Chip, where's Dale?

37-It was on the other side of this hill that we found all the treasures

Thats it for now....Sorry for being image-heavy! Thanks for looking!

A nice set. There's a very English feel about this place, especially in the symbolism.

In 4, the stylised trefoil symbolises the Holy trinity.
The hand holding a flower in 7 is quite common here, as is the draped column.
15 shows a weeping willow.
I think the sheep in 18 is a Lamb, as Joyce was only three.

Some nice work here, the table tombs represent money, both in your country and mine.

Oh my how I love cemeteries and wow this one is so awesome.  Love that we could still read so many of the stones!  You have any more to post?  Tables - I don't think I have seen that in any cemetery around here.  Maybe cuz no one around here has any money huh.  This is SO neat!!

Don't judge me unless you have looked through my eyes, experienced what I have and cried as many tears as me.  Until then back off, cause you have no idea.

I have never seen the stone tables either, however, it is known that Victorians were fond of having picnics in the cemetaries.  Perhaps they actually sat at these tables and had fine feasts.

Thanks Col! I had no idea about those symbols. And on the oldest one it looks like a dragon!

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Notice that in photo 9 the husband is 28 years older than the wife. Even for the 19th century that was a tad excessive. Why would such a young woman marry such an older man? Because she was one of the millions of "Civil War Brides" of the late 19th Century.

You see, President Chester A. Arthur granted lifetime pensions for all Civil War Vets AND their wives! Young ladies (some as young as 12) snagged up these old vets for the money. The last Civil War Veteran died in 1957. The last Civil War Bride died just a few years ago. That concludes our history lesson for the day.
