It's been bugging me for a while now and wanted to throw it out to you guys. Sorry I didn't get a better shot of it while I was there, but I think you can probably get the idea from this...

It was in an old hospital/tuberculosis hospital. It was two glass containers that reached all the way to the ceiling, which was approximately 10 feet tall. The stuff on the ground around it was spilled out of the one side so it looked to be something like sand (not sure if it was a liquid at one point or not?)

Looks like containers for embalming or something...where you extract the body fluids into one tank and inject the embalming fluid in from the other tank.

I'd agree with cyber on this one... usually they are gravity driven though I have not seen the two tube set up before, but it may have been for multiple tables.  The bottom seems low though.  Usually the embalming ones like this would sit a little higher off the ground (above the top of the table by like 4-6 inches or so).  It might be part of a suction machine though too.

It almost has the look of a tube system for transporting "tubes" with messages.   The one in the hospital where I worked was in the wall.   Were their openings on the top and bottom?

I don't remember there being openings on the top or bottom.  Somebody from another site suggested some sort of oxygen filtering system... and they actually used the sand to filter back then.

These two tubes were definitely connected together it seemed.
