While in MN for a business trip... I stumbled across a new history channel program that follows the exploits of three men who infiltrate abandonments to "rescue items of value," or something along those lines... The particular episode I saw showed them removing items from an abandoned lace factory I know I've seen many times in the pages here at Opa... I don't know what's sadder... 1. That these guys are pulling neat stuff out of the abandonments that we all know and love, or 2. That history channel is televising the names and locations of these sites... Thoughts / comments?

Apparently its existence is not a done deal... what I saw was a Pilot (and as such if you look for it on the History Channel's website... you won't find it listed).

I saw that show. Beautiful site and fascinating artifacts. They climb to the top of an 18th century clock tower. it's called "Abandoned" I believe. I'll watch it.

I'll have to look for this. Not sure how I feel about it either.

They are only going into abandoned places that are going to be demolished and soon.

So I think it is a great idea, they are saving items from the buildings that would just end up in a huge pile of rubble.

The Lace Factory, the guy paid $1500.00 to the owner and had only one day to get out anything he wanted.

Thanks Shadow for clarifying that - it makes a huge difference...! Would've had to be pissed if they weren't getting permission and the places weren't being demo'ed...

The owner of Scranton Lace is a money whore, taking whatever he can for any spare cash.  Case in point is that he scrapped 4 or 5 of those huge looms for cash.  They were relics of history and now they are just melted down for scrap with other garbage.  He kept one for the "museum" he wants to open in the space along side a rock climbing wall and condos.

I watched that show as well and I couldn't stand those guys who were scrapping.  They were trying so hard to be likable and it just fell flat.  I'd probably watch it if it became a series though, just to see where they are going.
