So yesterday I was browsing around looking for advice on the best way to go about doing video work involving architecture for a project I'm starting and someone mentioned using Magic Lantern firmware on Canon cameras to unlock a bunch of extras for video (and still) recording. Assuming I'd like to try it on my friend's 7D, I discovered that putting the Magic Lantern firmware on my 50D enables it to shoot video!
Granted, it's unable to record audio (I have a Zoom H2 for that), but in the short amount of time I've messed with it, the quality seems rather good for a camera not originally designed to shoot video. It also only works in live view, and from what I tell is good with manual focus only (though I'm researching more into that now). Obviously I haven't had time to really put this new feature to use yet, but it looks promising and hopefully tomorrow I can play with it some more.
In addition to video enabling, ML also allows 9 exposure HDR bracketing and previewing IN camera, as well as easy setup for time lapse, focus stacking and a whole host of other features I've barely even read about, much less tinkered with.
The software also works with the Rebel T1i/T2i/T3i, 60D, 5D MkII, and has even more features (such as audio gain control) when used on those bodies.
I searched the forum for other threads about ML but didn't see anything, so I'd be interested to hear what others users have to say, or at the least, let other people know about my discovery (even though it's kinda old news)
