Anyone else here ever have to take this???  My b/f was put on it for his anxiety... this stuff should seriously be banned!!!  He is currently having to taper off it 5mg at a time every 2 weeks and he is still having severe issues.  He gets shocks through his body, he can't sleep, his vision is being messed with and when he was put on it his cravings for sugar was so severe he put on 30 lbs in about 2 months! Now that he is down to 10 mg his cravings have stopped and has already lost at least 10 lbs.

A coworker went off it too fast and is now seeing a Dr for vision issues because of it.  She also had severe cravings for sweets and put on a ton of weight. Since she has come off it she has lost the weight again.

http://www.quitpaxil.org/

There is a whole page devoted to getting off it.  Use of or changing to medications like prozac can help with the withdrawal. It is suggested that anyone wishing to quit should speak to a doctor before changing their medications at all.  Use of almost any medication for the treatment of depression comes with increased risk of suicide and discontinuing without the care of a doctor can be a very serious matter.

More information on Paxil and its side effects can also be found here http://www.rxlist.com/paxil-drug.htm

Thanks Hon... he is weening off it to get on meds that don't mess with him as much.  We understand most meds are going to have some type of side effect but this stuff is just awful!  It really shouldn't be legal.

I work in mental health so I would be remiss in my duty not to say that.  Paxil is great when it works, but like any medication it has side effects.

My b/f was very appreciative of the site you directed me to.  That was one he had not seen yet (and he's read many).  This one has been far more helpful.  Thank you:)

My sister and I used to joke that we were testimonies to the effectiveness of Paxil.  It did help me a lot, but I "grew out of it".  It seemed to lose its effect after about 10 years of use and upping the dose.  When you get to the max dose and it is not working, they switch you to something else.  My doctor gave me the step down instructions and allowed me to take the new drug when I was reducing and eliminating the Paxil.  Missing even one dose of Paxil will cause side effects.  My worst were the dizzy sick feeling and a roaring in my ears.  My sister went off it for awhile but nothing else worked as well so she went back on it now and feels much better.

It worked great for me, only used it about 6 months, really helped my anxiety and panic attacks. I actually lost about 20 lbs while on it.

Paxil was the second med. I was introduced to about 20 years ago.  It made me feel so toxic I cried to the physician to change to something else.  We switched to anafranil (which I don't think they even make anymore) and it made a big difference.

The beauty and the challenge of any psychotropic is that different people will respond differently to the same scrip.

It's hard not to feel like a guinea pig while the doc. continually changes your concoctions.  Once the right combination is found, it's a blessing...followed by continuous lifetime modifications.

Respectfully,

Chuck

I was put on it by an incompetent therapist whom I now wonder if she was actually certified.
Anyway, she got some doc to prescribe it, I forget the dose and I started it at about noon and nearly immediately, literally in a couple of hours it started having weird effects. The main one being I felt like I was wrapped in fluff and my ears were plugged as everything including sound seemed far away. I mentioned this in a phone call and was told I was imagining it as it took two weeks for it to take effect. It was reminiscent of how I felt when high, I do not like being high, only worse.
I took it for two more days and things only got worse and I only felt more disconnected and confused. I stopped it and destroyed the stuff at about noon on the third day.
I had had a very large emotional injury, all my support had left me w/o explanation or acknowledgment. These were the first people I had ever met in my life who supported me, so their sudden withdrawal from my life was a huge deal and yet no one I turned to would offer help. I never did find out what happened but over time the pain diminished and only bothers me when I think about some thing fondly for a bit then remember the betrayal.

Anyway Paxil is an awful thing if you ask me. I can see easily how it could drive a person crazy or make them suicidal as has been reported.
