Illinois landowners have a new way to tell people to stay off their property.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is letting people know about a new law that lets landowners use purple paint on trees and posts to warn people about trespassing. The law doesn't apply in Chicago.

But landowners can't stop posting "no trespassing" signs just yet. Until Jan. 1, 2013, property owners using purple marks still need to give the "no trespassing" warning on a sign at the main entrance to their property or in some other written or spoken way.

The purple markings that mean "no trespassing" are vertical lines at least 8-inches long and colored post caps.

People who trespass can be charged with a misdemeanor.

I work in Rockford and had started seeing this about 2 weeks ago, but it hasn't really caught on out here yet.  Wonder how long it will take.

I can see that being challenged BIG TIME.

First off, because any Joe Schmo can buy a can of purple paint...AND any other color to spray over the purple.

PLUS...I'm sure plenty of environmentalists are going to have plenty to say about painting trees like that.

well the funniest part is the line they showed as an example is painted horizontally, not vertically.   Wonder if I can get away with using that as an argument for violating the rules Smiley

Anybody can buy no trespassing signs too, or the materials to tear them down (in the same sense as painting over the purple). However, unlike typical signs, the paint can be painted over but not torn off completely. A paint over of it makes an attempt at tampering obvious.

"Sorry officer. I did not know the purple paint marked it off limits. How was I to know, I am not from Illinois, I am from Kentucky. We use signs. But now that I know.. I will leave and pay attention to them from now on."  Wink

"Excuse me Officer, but where I come from, purple paint MEANS: get naked and touchy feely.  You are looking FINE in that uniform 2nite."
